Default Thinking to upgrade to M3 E92 - am i crazy?

well, i'm almost 4 years with my S2000 and thinking maybe to move to the E92 M3.

my car is a weekend only toy, no need for 4 seats and mostly used for:
- fast canyon/mountain sessions
- tracking on a fairly small circuit (mostly 2nd gear)
- occasional auto-x/gymkhana

am i happy with the S2000? - YES
but there is an urge to move forward.

the current Boxter S is too expensive for me to buy and the 2010 model is a big concern for reliability and repair costs.

M3 i lust and it's engine is just crazy. i can scratch enough money to get 2010 and it's quite reliable and its consumables are not way too expensive.

but - i'm afraid that maybe after a while it will feel boring, too heavy, not exciting enough.

would love to hear thoughts from people who have experience with both cars

Sounds like your mind is made up. Don't let others here deter you from your wants! You seem to know enough about what you want and the whether you get bored with a car is up to you.

I think M3 is a fantastic car (full disclosure: I have not driven a e92 M3), but I'm not sure I follow the rationale. A 2010 Boxster S is a big concern in terms of reliability and repair but an M3 isn't? I may agree with you if we were talking about the older versions with M96/M97 engines perhaps, but the 2010 had the same motor as the current Boxster/Cayman. Not to mention, it is my understanding that M3's are quite expensive to maintain properly as they get older - to the point where, I've hear some people say that you should never buy a used M3 out of CPO warranty (admittedly, I think this may be a gross exaggeration though).

I'd go with the Boxster S (or Cayman S, actually, but I am biased as a Cayman owner) given that you want light and nimble and don't need back seats, but like I said before, the e92 M3 sounds like a fantastic car too so to answer the original question, no, I don't think you're crazy.

Your not crazy. I have had 2 E92 chasis cars and love driving them not to bad for service and plenty of good aftermarket parts and mods.

A supercharged s2k will be faster and still more reliable.

ahahahah.... ya my 2013 Dual Clutch E92 is for sale.... price is a very reasonable $58,995. has under 9k miles.

I do not enjoy driving it. But I do have a 600hp stick shift dodge.

Another vote for 987 Boxster S. I like the M3 but I would only buy one if I needed back seats.

As has been mentioned 2009+ Porsche's avoid a lot of issues that plagued earlier water cooled models.

you are crazy. besides the backseats nothing else attracts me to the e92 m3. It is not as fun to drive as people think/assume. I preferred my 1M by far. If i was in your position id go for a 09-10 Cayman S. (or boxster). They are actually pretty reliable. Just as reliable if not more than the m3. Also the Auto M3 is freaking BORING.

Also idk where you are reading/getting your info but the M3 isn't cheap for consumables. Tires on 19s aren't cheap. Brakes aren't cheap. The boxster/cayman will cost the same if not cheaper than the M3. If you want cheap consumables its hard to beat the s2k.

The gas mileage is also atrocious on the e92 M.
