Default TL replacement - downgrade

My TL-S transmission failed today and since i bought a truck i was going to give it to my mother but she doesn't want it no more. Which cars can be a good replacement sedan with slight downgrade.

I'm looking at price range 20-25k and Camry and Accord are out of the picture since we want to own something other than those two brands.

My choice is Mazda 6 right now (i get to influence heavily because my parents are carefree about cars as long as they run well). What cars would you choose?

The reason I like Mazda 6 is because after Toyota and Honda, Mazda is the company I like as a car manufacturer and price range limits a lot of other imports as we are looking forward for another purchase within 2 years.

I'd appreciate if you can broaden my choice a bit because I tend to fall in love with certain cars in hasty manner.

Passat or Legacy would be my choices after the Accord.

Agree on legacy, except that I'll put it before accord. TSX now can be had for reasonably cheap without navi. My friend got one for around 28k otd with california tax. I have a feeling that you can do better if you look hard.

Why not a used 2004 TL for $25K? An Accord can be had all day (in 4-cyl EX-L) for $25K out-the-door. A used TSX can be had for $25K OTD.

Legacy GT, since Accord and Camry are out of the equation.

for the majority of the population, those are the two cars to get.......if the primary concern is reliability, stick with those two.
