Trading in S2K
Sorry guys, another s2k sell thread, but I just got married and unfortunately, I can only afford one car right now (need to sell current house and get a newer better one). I need a practical car (yes the wife made me do it
). Seriously though, she's fine with the s2k but we can never fit stuff in it when we go to furniture stores etc. So I need to get a car that has at least enough room to put a box o' stuff. I went to the Subaru dealership today and checked out the new 04 Forester Turbo. Pretty nice car that supposedly has 0-60 times of 5.3 and 1/4 in 13.8. The power was there so it seemed possible. Then they said "We see that you have an S2k... would you like a 4 door with similar capabilities?" I of course said suuuuuuuure.....they handed me the keys to an STi. Test drove it and it was a MONSTER. BEAUTIFUL. This car would help me get over the loss of my s2000 (I would still take the s2k any day....as a second car).
Sti has just awesome pull through the gears and its pretty decently put together. The power helps me overcome the downright ugliness of the car (what the hell were they thinking with that god awful hood scoop?).
So here's the situation. Dealership is willing to give me 22,000 for my MY01 Red s2000 and sell the STi for 30,000 plus tax/title. Is 22k a good trade in value for my car? Its in good shape...just needs new tires but otherwise showroom stock.
BTW i live in the Metro NYC area.
Sorry for the sell thread...but this site has just been awesome over the years and I respect peoples input.
Thanks.

I have been throwing around the idea on trading in my Honda S2000 for an Evo or an STI for quite some time.
After shopping around It appears that I can get a great deal on the Evo. STI's are still very hard to find and when you do most dealers are looking to get MSRP. Which dealer in NY is offering you and STI for $30k ? Where did you drive it ? Their are NO dealers willing to let me drive the car they barely let me sit in the car and start it up.
I have been offered anywhere from $15k - $19k for my 2000 S2000 w/54k miles.
If I could trade my car for an STI selling at $30k I would do it.
I have driven the Evolution 8 and I was damn impressed... it felt VERY similar to the S2000 just a little faster, more powerful brakes, BETTER handling all wraped up in a very practical 4 door with trunk package.

It was Lynnes Nissan in NJ. I have 18,500 miles on my car. The actual appraiser did not quote me a trade in value but the dealership manager said we should be able to get you at least 21500 if not 22000. So obviously im taking that with a grain of salt. Funny thing is, they said 28k for a loaded Forester XT or 30k for the STi (No radio or floor mats).
I went to the dealership today which was a rainy day (don't know if that matter towards their willingness to let me test drive the STi). Knock on wood, I've always been lucky with deals on cars. When I got my S2k in the middle of '01 summer, I got the car for 32.0k OUT THE DOOR....pretty sweet deal eh?
I saw somewhere on this board of a guy who had a MY01 white with a little damage who was getting a trade in of 21k flat in CT. So that was my starting point... I was actually expecting a bit less. Oh well....the more money on the trade in the better.
I was actually looking at quite a few cars. But I want 4 wheel drive...don't want a big ass SUV and can't really spend more than 30k. So that's why I went with Subaru (pretty damn nice cars for the money and they run forever).
Some other's I've looked at are the G35 sedan (4 wheel drive coming in December), TL, Audi 1.8T (slow), Maxima (uh...no), and the CTS.
I know the EVO8 is in the same league...but I've just got a bad feeling about Mitsu's. This car I'm going to be purchasing will be with me (hopefully) for the next 8+ years,

How do you like you STi? If you don't mind me asking...how much did you pay for it? What's you're insurance like in relation to what you were paying on the S2k. I'm looking to save money in monthly payments. Hopefully the Sti will be a bit cheaper in insurance being a 4 door 4wd vehicle.

The STi is a good car, insurance rates will be higher on it of course. I prefer the all around quality that the S2K posses over the STi. My STi started squeaking and rattling after 200 miles, it took about 10K miles before my WRX started it, so the build quality is better in the S2K. I would say that if you had to go from S2K to a 4door sedan action the STi might work for you, I just will never go back to the WRX or the STi. Goodluck and I hope that you find something that fits your needs ( I know it can be hard to think logically when you feel the power behind the STi, just think there might be better vehicles around that price for you that will not have the power but they will offer better quality and comfort (( if that is a concern )))
