we need another discussion of Corvette vs. Porsche
Hmm, I'm game.
On the one hand the Cayman S vs C6 z51 debate
On the other hand the 911 S vs the C6 Z06
In both cases the P-car is the slower tho I use that term loosely b/c even the Cayman S should do 0-60 in 5 sec dead, top speed 170+ mph. Its faster than 90% of sporty cars around. And the 911 S (while slow next to the C6 Z06) is still a quick car low 4's 0-60.
So the P-cars are not as quick or brutally powerful as the vettes. But in the real world, day-to-day driving, they're considered quick in my book.
Style/status = Porsche (IMO).
I could go either way with this debate. I've seen on a Z06 forum quys asking if the C6 Z06 comes in at $75K will people go with it or a 911 S. When the old C5 Z06 was selling for $50K (or less) that wasn't 911 money. If the new C6 Z06 tops $70K thats 911 money.
Today I'm leaning towards a C6 Z06 b/c right now (on paper) there are only a handful of cars ever made with this kind of power to weight. Even the 911 GT-2 isn't that close. I'm talking cars like the F40 or the F50 or the Ford GT. There are others but it's a very short list. List up all the cars with 500 hp and 3100 lbs it's not a lot of cars.

In my opinion it's hard to justify spending $60K for a car with the Cayman's level of performance these days (yes, I know about the NSX). Given Porsche's options list (you have to pay extra for things like leather seats), it's most likely the Cayman's price will be in the upper 60K to lower 70K. So in essence it's Cayman vs C6Z06.
Maybe it can be argued that driving the Porsche gives a visceral thrill that can't be captured by mere numbers but 505BHP and 3100lbs is pretty thrilling IMO.
Buying it for looks can also be used but that's pretty darn subjective.
So most people who purchase the Cayman will be buying it for the name.

Talking about power or performance picture a Cayman with a Z06 engine, you're 95% of the way to a Carrera GT. In other words 0-60 in 3.7 sec (est.) has never came as cheap as a C6 Z06 will be. Not even close prolly a Carrera GT engine would costs as much as the C6 Z06 for the entire car.
BTW I read they're gonna sell a crate motor from the C6 Z06 for (can't remember but I think) around $15K

911 or now 911 S vs. C6 Z51
&
911 TT or 911 GT3 vs. C6 Z06
These were always the comparisons done in the mags. The Porsches have always been 2X-2.5X more expensive than the Corvettes comparable model. Always has been, always will be. I think the comparison of a Cayman to Corvette is kind've lame as one has 4 semi real doors & seats.
If anything is you were just looking at strict $/function, it would probably be a Boxster S vs. C6 Convertible.

all around it sounds as if the Z06 will be the better vehicle but the one thing that would consistently keep me from purchasing one is the mere fact that i see a dozen parked in the safeway parking lot everyday. granted they won't all be of Z06 status but a vette looks like a vette looks like a vette. i've always enjoyed a bit of exclusivity, take that as you like.
