This is not the only forum I am asking this question on, I do not care if you like the car or not. I do not car if the car impresses people, just answer this question, Or do not say anything at all!

What are YOUR experiences or knowledge with maint issues with the Supra? A "Friend" is looking at a 1997 tt 6speed that is modded and assumed to be a show car only. What do we need to look for as far as problems tha happen with these cars.

Be positive or just spare me the bs remarks please.

My '97 BPU++ was fine ex. when the I/C tubing blew off, once leaving me stranded (and requiring new spark plugs), and once close enough to a quick lube that they tightened it for me. No probs. after I upgraded the tubing.

Make sure it has a turbo timer which is used. Otherwise I'd say it's perfectly reliable and very durable.

depends.... you said "assumed" to be a show car only... so how do you know it wasn't raced out before? and 2nd.. is his price really low for a show car? because if it is.. then that means hes just trying to get rid of it fast... and like Chris S said... does he have a turbo timer on it? if he does... at least he MIGHT have let it cool down properly.

How many miles are on it? What has been done to it? For a quick motor check, do either a compression or leak down(preferred) test. That will tell you how healthy the motor is. Check out the wheel rear bearings if you can. Do this by jacking up the rear end and then without the brakes on or the car in gear, wiggle the rear wheels to see if there is any significant play. Check for smoke on start up or after a hard run coming out of the exhaust. If it smokes, it is either valve seals or turbo seals. If it is still on stock twins, check that both boost properly and neither of them whine. I haven't had any major problems with my Supra. Normal maintenance is pretty much all I've had to do. Depending on how many miles are on the car, you may want to check/replace the following - timing belt, water pump, spark plugs, accessory belt, brake rotors and pads, etc. I would also advise changing all the fluids. Check www.mkiv.com for good information. Good luck, they are great cars.

it only has 32ooo mi on it is the second owner. he is 52 and said he and his fam just got a 56 t-bird that they like better, so he wants to get rid of it. It does have a turbo timer, oz wheels, eibach suspension, greedy up/down pipe, bov etc, the works, along with a claimed " competition" stereo

btw I have a serious hook up on oem parts, that is why I am looking into this.

Thanks for the postitive info.

MKIV is extremely solid. The only issue with me is that *IF* it is modded, then there is probably more of a chance that it's been beaten on. Still, a great used car to buy if you can afford it.

I just drove it, wow is it clean, the guy only put 3000 miles on it in 3 years. nice nice car. lightly modded with greedy parts. perfect condition with the wing removed, but a bit pricey, he wants $36000, for it and it only books for 27500. so no financing on it unless I put stupid money down.

Nice car, but I'm gonna pass on this one.

What does modded mean? BPU cars are as reliable as if they came from the factory. When my 97 was BPU+ I never had any issues. The 2JZ is over built even in turbo form. I wouldn't worry about it too much, just have a mechanic check it over. Make sure you don't see any smoke at start up or full throttle, even if there is no cat, you should see much. Check for all the regular things like leaks or puddles. And make sure the car feels tight. Drive it, not too much should shake or rattle unless you have the targa off then it will feel like a wet string of spaghetti. People with singles, including myself, have been know to cause problems mainly due to tuning or taking short cuts. In all don't worry that much but have it checked, get a compression test if possible.

Matt,

That sounds like a good price for a clean '97 w/ such low miles. You can blame The Fast n Furious for such lofty resale values.
