i believe with a straight pipe and advanced exhaust timing, you can create the same effect.

Well pretty much.
Its just a little gas spilling out from the turbo DP getting into the exhaust manifold. The sheer heat of the exhaust can cause the gas to ignite!

pretty much a "big" backfire...like motorcycles...DOES look sweet though

Or attatch a spark plug to the inside of your exhaust, and wire it to a switch or button. A very rich fuel/air mixture would also help
