Default when rolling about 5mph which gear do you put in?

I just learned stick so I don't know a lot of thing..

so if you are going around 5mph thinking that I might need to stop but light turns green..do I put it in 1st or 2nd gear?

If I try to go into 2nd gear when the car is going slower than that the car shakes..so I just go into 1st if the car is going really slow (under 5mph)..

You can do either, if you put it in second accelerate very slowly so you dont bog your motor. Or put it in first and give it some gas to revmatch.

Right before stopping I shift into neutral. At those speeds I would go into first. If I was still in second and was 10 mph or higher I'd just stay in second. No big deal.

I'd go to first, but if you are decelerating from, say, 20 mph, and go to 5 mph, you may need to rev match as well (since you say you are new, I'm sure you probably didn't learn it yet).

What I also do is double clutch when I rev match because, from my experience, a lot of manual cars are "stubborn" to go from 2nd to 1st for some reason.

Don't be embarrassed if you can't go to 1st at low speeds. A lot of people I know who drive for years roll on 2nd gear and the car shakes (they don't notice it though)

Agreed . . . its really not that hard to put it into 1st from a low 5mph roll . . . it may require a very minor throttle blip, but not much.

Until you get it just right, you can let the clutch out slowly while giving it a little gas, kind if like you are starting to move the car again from a stop, but your doing it from a 5mph roll.

Unfortunately that's often the speed I'm travelling during rush hour...

One way would be to leave the car in 2nd gear and coast with the clutch depressed. If the light stays red just brake, or if it turns green you can accelerate from 5mph in 2nd with a little clutch slip. The other would be in gear and clutch released. With my '06 warm idle is ~1000RPM which equals 4 MPH in first gear and 7 MPH in second. If I were to use second I'd have to keep the clutch slipping to go that slow or the engine would start stumbling. So the answer for me would be 1st gear. Not sure how much different it would be through the years, but at that low of RPM it's probably not much.

If I am down shifting or slowing down (say coming up to a stop light) and I am going about 5mph, I go to 2nd gear. If the light suddenly turns green or the traffic starts moving again, that seems to be the right gear and I have plenty of power to accelerate and keep with the flow of traffic.

On the other hand if I am in bumper-to-bumper traffic on the highway, and traffic is moving at 1 or 2mph I go to first. That is really the only time I am using 1st gear, except accelerating from a stand still.

You will get used to the gearing. S2K was my first manual car also. Enjoy

Good lord. Second gear doesn't exist until above 20mph. But maybe that's why my neighbors are yelling at me to slow down...
