Who has driven the Ring?
I'll be doing this very thing in July. You can rent a car (Polo GTI, Swift GTI and FRS) from the N-Ring for 100-140 EUR per lap. That's what I'll be doing.
As to video games, I can't speak to the N-Ring, but I thought Forza did a great job of teaching me Road Atlanta. However, video games cannot, at all, convey elevation changes.

If you are shy about driving your new car around the Ring, how about hire one of the Taxi's to give you a ride around? They go much faster than you'll be able to manage, that's for sure.
Are you going to build up a unique color combo? I thought if you buy a Euro delivery car, they are able to paint it in any BMW color offered. I know Mercedes does this. Would be awesome to have a basic "one off" color. If your dealer is playing dumb on the issue, keep pressing him about it.

I don't like the taxi idea so much because I want to drive it. And I think driving my car will be fine, gonna get red. Have to choose between a 335 and a 328. I drove the 328 and loved it, but have not driven the 335 to see if it is worth the extra 5k. This is not going to be my all out speed car, just a DD and I really like the gas mileage of the 328, it is Civic like but still has plenty of power.
I know Forza can not really teach elevation changes but knowing what turns are coming up helps a bit. Although I have read cautions about all these blind corners, but watching a couple videos, the sightlines seem pretty good, and again, I will probably be driving 7/10 ths if that fast. I would like my wife to ride along but she gets scared and car sick easy. Not sure I want puke in my new car.
do you have FORZA or any of the stupid video games that have the Ring in it? My son is 18 and probably knows every turn just from playing XBOX! that would be a plus... I know the video games are actually semi realistic to the course I have raced on.
I have it the Ring on my list of things to do.....
You should add something to your list

I was adrs2k's co-pilot. I was stationed in Germany and bought an S2000 while there. I have more than 150 driving/passenger laps out there. Going on the 'Ring taxi is a waste of time and money. I do know a person in Germany with an AP1. He might be willing to show you the track. My biggest advice would be to NOT go solo. Take someone with that knows the track. I still have a few friends there that know the track decently well. I can get you in contact with them if you want.
Feel free to ask anything!

Thanks for the offer. I just might take you up on it. I have read you can find some people hanging around who know the track and don't mind tagging along. I just watched a video of some guy who took a lap in his new 3 series and he seemed to be driving really casually.
I think the stress factor will be very dependent on the number of people that day. Some videos look crazy with cars, and others get passed or pass someone just a few times during a ten minute lap.
It is just a guess on my part but the busier videos look like designated track days and not touristefahren because the cars look both sportier and drive more aggressively.

I want to start by saying that I think Vader1 is a swell fellow, so I mean no disrespect in any way.
But have you considered the possibility that this is a bad idea? Maybe you have some other type of performance driving experience that I missed, but it seems like you are really jumping right in to the superbowl having not played in the minor leagues yet. I suck at driving on the track, so don't get the impression that I'm ripping on you, but the first time I ever drove a car on a road course I was blown away by how hard it is. Race car drivers and video games make it seem so easy but it is really hard to do well. For me anyway, there was nothing intuitive about it. I thought I'd be able to tell when to brake, what speed to take into a turn, etc. and I was flat wrong on turn after turn for the first few times I went to the track.
I would suggest that you drive any car on any track, at least once, before you drive on the Ring. This will at least allow you to make a few mistakes in a better environment, rather than baptism by fire.
I can understand why a track junkie would want to drive the Ring, but I'm kind of lost as to why that matters to someone who doesn't normally track their car and who doesn't want to drive that fast on it. Sounds kind of like taking a helicopter ride to Mt. Everest just to have bragging rights about going to the top of Mt. Everest when you're not even a climber.
Again, I mean no offense, but this whole thing seems kind of odd/ like it is a bad idea without some track time under your belt first.
