Does it die after it is started and you put it in first?

no its fine when its started up...goes in gear perfectly...its just when its off in order to turn it on it has to be in neutral in cant be n any gear....im thinking its something with my kickstand safety switch or the clutch safety switch.....

I believe most bikes tell you to start it in neutral anyway.

Can you still push start the bike?

Never of heard of this situation coming from the factory. Every bike I've ever owned (all of big 4) start with the clutch in/kickstand up in 1st. Make sure it's not your kickstand sensor.

I'd say the same thing, kickstand sensor, but not if he can start it in neutral and it doesn't stop when he puts it in gear? Sounds more like a clutch switch failure (don't know if that bike has one). Because that might not need to be "made" to start in neutral.

Maybe kickstand switch, but that's weird if it doesn't die when you drop into first gear...

Are you sure you used to start in first and not neutral before you put the bike away? I just found out last month that 07 ZX6Rs doesn't start outside of neutral. Found this out while queuing up to get out on track; talk about embarassing. haha.

yea im thinking it is has something to do with the clutch switch sensor....its not the kick stand because as soon as its running n i put it in gear it stays on...if it was the kick stand sensor it would shut off as soon as i put it in gear.....im prolly just going to replace the clutch switch sensor....

thanks for the help

Did you recently install new levers and forget to put the switch in the right place when you put them on?

You garaged it for a month and then started having issues?

Charge your battery.

I'm guessing that while it's in gear, even with the clutch engaged, you have some friction there and theres not enough juice to kick the starter over with the added load.

Happens all the time on mine, I'll park in neutral, turn off the bike, side stand down and then I put it in gear.

When I go back to start it, while it's off I put it in neutral, clutch in, hit start and it jerks a bit like it's still in gear even though it's not and the clutch is in and the starter sounds like its under more strain than if I just leave it in neutral when I park.

Just a guess...
