That car is a dog even with AWD+TT.

I just really don't understand this thing. It weighs goddamn 3700 lbs, the engine is such a tremendous pain in the ass to work on, it doesn't handle particularly well, it doesn't really look very good, it just kind of sucks.

If we lived in a world without 350z's, s2000's, RX7's, Corvette's, etc maybe I could see buying one of these. There are just so many cars that are better.

I had an old MT Stealth R/T, the 222hp NA version. They're FWD and front-heavy, so handling suffers. I felt like, for the time, they used very nice components. The car had a lot of parts that were pretty well engineered for the NA version and rarely broke. But the parts and labor were both expensive when something went. And the suspension was pretty well worn out.

I replaced a clutch, CV joints, and gave it a full tune up over a year or two. It was a good car. But I got it for $1000 (it was worth at least $3k) from a one-owner dentist that had a new Z4 and wanted it gone.

I agree. I've owned both and dragged my VR-4 about once a month for 2 years without anything ever breaking. I only had minor bolt ons though. The motors are pretty stout.

Haven't been on their forums in years, but you can probably get a decent condition VR-4 for 10K these days. Also, check out dynamicracing.com for parts/insight.

Bolt-ons and 1 bar of boost will get you high 12's at ~106MPH.

Like others have stated, there are other cars worth considering, but at this price point, and if you're wanting a GT, AWD, some cool tech (for its heyday and even still today), the VR-4 is a good choice.

it was a pretty direct competitor to the 300zx and the TT supra(assuming we are talking vr4 here) of course we all see which ones lasted the test of time.

the problems are similar to a TT 300zx- too much heat+tiny engine compartment= shit breaks, wires melt eventually, and the host of other issues that accompany an older turbo vehicle.

stock they aren't too fast but they are pretty easily modded and can be quite nasty- the AWD really gives it an edge. however, it is heavy as hell and doesn't handle particularly well.

also IIRC the older models(like 90-92?) had much more stuff in the way of cool gadgets. 4 wheel steering, active aerodynamics and what not(I guess more stuff to break too, depends on your perspective)

Should be able to pick up a 90-96 300zx tt for that price and it's much more fun and probably less headaches.

^ LOL @ a 300zxTT being less headaches than anything

in all reality both will be full of headaches. twin turbo v6 in a cramped engine bay that isn't properly cooled and doesn't have much airflow= headaches all around. the old Z's used to fry all of the underhood wiring after a few years and had some strange type of oil system that leaked everywhere consequently setting the car on fire eventually if the problem was not addressed.
