Advice on M3 vs. 335is
#21
I like my 335, if fact I am on my 2nd one and I had an S2000 for 5 years. I have modified my 09 coupe more than I did my 07. I put on about 7k miles a year. Both of mine have been trouble free and not needed a fuel pump. I don't even worry about it since it only takes a few hours to replace. I also did the performance center delivery on both and it's a blast. The only reason to get the 335is is if you want the DCT trans. This trans is not like the version in the M3! The M3 DCT is awsome, but the Z4/335 version just feels like an automatic to me. It is that smooth, but that's not what I want. Other than that, there isn't much special about the 335is. Both of mine have been tuned with no issues. The BMW power bump is not that special compared to the various tunes out there and I have used them all. It has extra cooling capacity, but I have never had a cooling issue on either one of my 335's even running hard on the Draggon or running at top speed for extended periods. On my 09, I installed BMW's suspension and springs and installed the M3's suspension parts since most of them are interchangable. This set up completely changes the feel of the car. I am running about 390hp 390tg and with this suspension set up and power, I have the best of both worlds. On the highway I will average about 25mpg. Even driving it hard I will still get 16mpg. My neighbor has an 08 M3 and is always moaning about the harsh ride and 13mpg.

It's so easy to pull power out of it b/c it's a turbo w/ boost set at a level where BMW is comfortable warrantying it. This is nothing new to the 335i, just look at similar HP boosts available w/ the Supra Turbo, FD RX-7, Evo, STI, 911 TT, etc.

Thanks for all of the input. I really, really want an M3. I'm also not all that worried about the depreciation. If I can find a loaded sedan for about $45,000-$50,000 and then sell it four or five years later for $8,000-$10,000, the fun factor will be worth it.
The simple solution is to keep the S2000 as a daily driver. The problem is that I live in Orlando area. Hardtop or not, my seats will get stolen if it is sitting out in my driveway, guaranteed. My wife isn't going to park outside. Those of you that are married understand this. I don't want to press my luck.
Maybe I'm a snob, but I'm not going to drive a 1999 GSR around. I'm just not going to do that.
My S2000 is probably worth $14,000 plus the $4,000-$5,000 for the sale of hardtop and mods. I still think selling the S2000 and buying the 335is is the solution, but I want that elusive M3. It's fantastic.
The 335is with factory 19's, better looking exterior than normal 335i, and little need to modify makes it an in between M3 and 335i that may satisfy me.

You see, I know these Dinan/flash cars are fast. But my question is "where" do they beat the M3. Maybe to 60mph but I still think the M has a higher top end. I could be wrong here. What is the quartermile and trap speeds if you dont mind me asking.
Sorry to take this somewhat OT. :-(

The 335 in my opinion makes the M3 irrelevant. The current 335 is like old M3. Just be prepared for some heavy maintenance costs.
Fuel pump and overheating (there was never an overheating issue, it was blown out of proportion) are fixed.
