Boxster (base) v SLK350 v Z4
OK I'm not in the market for one, but I'd rather have the Boxster even tho the hard-top vert is a great idea.
I don't want to put the Z4 in the poll but did anyway just in case.
Well Automobile has the SLK v Boxster
SLK350
$46K(base)/$51K(as tested)
3.5L 268hp 258-TQ
3280 lbs
0-60 5.9s
0-100 14.1s
0-120 21.5s
1/4 mile 14.2@101mph
70-0 braking 168 ft
Boxster
$44K/$49K
2.7L 236hp 199-TQ
3000 lbs
0-60 5.9s
0-100 15.1s
0-120 23.1s
14.5@98mph
70-0 151 ft
This was 6-speed MT for the SLK and 5-speed MT for the Boxster (But I think you can get a 6-speed for the Boxster)

Poor Z4 it's so ugly that it's like handicap by birth compared to others. It's so unfair to put it against the competition. There is not competition, although bmw might think there is.

The new MB is pretty hot, I think I'd take it over the new Boxster, but I'd have to experience the two to know for sure.
The Z is pretty ugly, despite its abilities. I think sales are way down on it -25% from 03 to 04. BMW sold more last-year Z3's in 2002 than Z4's in 2004, or so I've heard.

Test drove the auto SLK 350, wasn't impressed at all. There's a huge lag between shifts when in the manual mode. Going to test-drive the manual transmission tomorrow and maybe I'll get a better feel of its performance.

Have you ever even driven one? That 3.0 L inline six automatically qualifies the Z4 as competition for any sports car in that price range. It's also a respectable handler, although not on the same plane as the Boxster.
