Camaro ZL1 1LE just ran a 7:16 at the Ring

That new Camaro is one capable car. I saw a 1LE (not ZL1) at the track the other day just passing everything under the sun, driver looked really capable of course, but man, what a machine, the car just looked composed through all the corners and the stock dual stage exhaust sounded friggin awesome.
But as mentioned above, the ring times have become background noise to me, I'd rather see it how it stacks up at local tracks and whether or not this car will overheat or not, seems like it won't sense it had to lap the ring.

I must say I envy you guys that have nearby tracks. I still have never had my first track day. Closest decent track is Brainerd International Raceway, 150 miles from me, or Road America 323 miles from me.

Incredibly impressive. I'm simply not attracted to the styling inside and out, but I may have to eventually put that aside and at least give one a try.
I wish GM applied this wizardry to a car that's not big and balls-out fast - something Miata-like, like the old Solstice/Sky. I know the new Camaro and Vette are awesome, but would prefer not needing a track to give them even a little bit of proper exercise. It's like having a Great Dane in a one-bedroom apartment.
Although not ideal, that's somewhat doable. Although I have Sonoma and Laguna Seca within 75 miles or an hour and a half, I prefer to go twice as far to Thunderhill simply because I like the track better (esp. the 5-mile configuration!). If you spend the night and make a trip out of it, it's not too bad. Although having only one track that close sucks, I'd get bored after a while.

Incredible time but I always view the ring times with a grain of salt. One there is no governing body. Two, there are always prepped one way or another, and three tires. If the manus would all agree to run it with no modifications from production version, ok, but they never do.
Nevertheless the car is very impressive. GM is kicking ass and so is Ford. Affordable sports cars, they are the go to right now. Japan doesn't want to compete.

I just did my first track day at laguna, you should really make a trip, lots of fun, I almost enjoyed being in the paddock more than on the track, it's like a car show only you can see the cars run in full song and people there aren't just their to show off, think more car convention than car show. Like mentioned above, make a weekend trip out of it, you'll have a whole new appreciation for your car.

On one hand I am kinda impressed, but on the other hand the daily new records at the ring got kind of boring long ago and mean nothing to me. They stuffed 650 horsepower into it, I should hope it would be fast.
I am more impressed that GM offers a capable car with that much power for $70k than I am with what benchmark it sets at the Ring. Ring times have become background noise to me.
But if Chevrolet really wanted to impress me or make me want that car, they would have to take into account that every minute I spend in it I would have a full view of that interior and hideous steering wheel. I'd give it an extra two points on a scale of one to ten if they just put the Corvette wheel into it instead of that current ghastly thing.
I think I am in a mood today.

Seems like they're killing the corvette market two fold: this + lawsuits
