I traded in the S2K and got an '04 Isuzu Axiom in order to save some money for the big move. Then I moved to GA and bought my first home so that ate up some funds.
The enthusiast bug hit me almost right away and I bought a '94 Nissan 300zx roadster. Spent some money on it but then sold it because it would never be what I wanted it to be without ridiculous amounts of cash investment.
Got married and thus spent our entire savings on the wedding & honeymoon.
As expected, the bug quickly returned and has been eating at me. This time, however, it was my wife's turn to get the automotive treat. We just bought her an '07 Acura TSX to replace her 03 Saturn Ion so that sucked up the slowly replenishing disposable funds.
My wife and I are planning to conceive our 1st child next year to I have a very small window of opportunity to get my car before all the focus is switched to child care.
The plan: Finish paying off the Axiom by December and purchase one of the following:
A. '04-06 S2K: Front runner
B. '04-06 350Z coupe or roadster: Close 2nd
C. '04-05 BMW 330ci: Luxury, style, performance & seats 4
D. '06-07 RX-8: Love everything about this car except the powerplant
E: '05-06 Mustang GT: Great bang for you buck performance and seats 4
In any case, the new purchase will be my weekend car as I will be keeping the Axiom as my DD.

For your weekend car, I'd definitely go with a roadster (since your DD and Wife's car aren't) for kind of the ultimate "change up" vehicle. Plus it being limited use, you don't have to worry much about any utilitarian needs.
