Going from S2K to a WRX

The WRX is fine for what it is, but you just need to understand what you are getting into. Stock the car is very softly sprung (non-STI), shifter is pretty poor, transmission is fairly weak, and it has a lot of boost lag (IMO).
Also, learning to track with a WRX is bad idea IMO. WRX drivers on avg are very bad on the track because most of them just assume the l337 AWD will save them. Learn on the track with something RWD with no nannies. In that sense the RX-8 would be a better alternative.

My wife wanted a new car: the lease on her Murano was up, she test drove the wrx and the turbo baja. We went with the baja because she thought the wrx was just to slow after her murano. Keep in mind she also occasionally drives the s2. with that in mind I would highly recommend the STI. Just my 2 cents

+1 on the STi. My roommate has an 02 wrx and has constant problems with it. Granted its stage 4 now, he blew 2nd gear, then 4th gear. The wrx tranny is crap and any power increase to the car will jeopardize the already weak tranny. The STi may be more expensive, but in the long run would be more worth while... 6 spd, stronger tranny, DCCD, more power obviously, better brakes etc. Well thats my suggestion but ultimately the choice is yours, and if you are content and happy with your choice thats all that counts!

Go with the STI. Its almost as much fun as RWD - I owned one before my S2k. I've seen 04's going for low $20s.
If you want new the 06 WRX is much improved with the 2.5L, steering, wheels, and other minor changes.

i have a 03 wrx and cant wait to trade it for an S. i enjoyed the wrx for the first year, but now the fun has worn off and it is time for a change. i had a 86 mr2 and 95 integra gsr and i want to go back to a small 2 door, just more fun to drive. for good wrx info check out nasioc.com.

Ehhhhh... after 5-6000km in the driver's seat of a really good friend's '02 WRX, I can pretty honestly say that "it's a great car, but I wouldn't buy one".
It's very "rubbery", with very vague steering, tons of body roll and undersized brakes. The shifter sucks, it has a ton of turbo lag...
It's torquey, has a ton of power between 3500rpm and redline, AWD rocks, it's very comfortable, it's entirely practical.
It would be a big, big downgrade in the "fun" department, coming from an S2000.
I've put a ton of Kms on a Mazdaspeed Protege also, and even being FWD with a lot less power, it's far more fun to drive - everything feels razor edged precise in it - and it's just as practical.
