as in 'the S5 is head and shoulders better'? Or vice versa? Sorry if that shoulda been obvious, the last I heard about the M5 was Clarkson banging on about what a beast it was but how much the electronics sucked.

I definitely don't want to hijack this thread, so I'll try to make this quick....
The M5 is waaaaaaay faster - it is a ridiculously fast car. The S5 is underpowered for the motor it has in my opinion. It is still quick, but I think it should be quicker. In the handling area, I'd put them very close to the same level. The S5 definitely inspires more confidence when tossing the car, but I've only been driving it for a week.
Daily Driver purposes (what I use the car for 98% of the time) the S5 is soooo much better to get from A to B in. the M5 wasn't terrible by any means, but it is very disappointing to have that power and not get to use it as often as I would have liked. The 2006 iDrive isn't bad unless you're Jeremy Clarkson and need something to bitch about. It certainly doesn't hold a candle to the 2010 MMI system.
These are two very different cars. The S5 is a GT car and the M5 is a big sedan. In comparing the two it is completely subjective to the person doing the comparing. Yeah, you can sit down and compare the numbers, but the M5 is going to rape the S5. It is about a lot more than just numbers. I can't tell you which car I like better.
