How Bad Really is the Acura CL-S Auto Tranny?
I was looking into '01-'02 Acura 3.2 CL-S's and I keep reading about the tranny problems. Is it honestly THAT bad? How many in reality fail?

it is bad....comsumer reports gave it their worst rating.....
i've never seen that in a Honda product. do yourself a favor and get the 6spd manual, the auto tranny can't seem to handle all that power.

Wow. Ironic thread timing. I was just looking at CL-Ss in the local Trader. On top of the tranny issues, they seem to be the least-loved Acuras around.
I don't recall seeing any 03 6-speeds locally; I'd imagine they're about impossible to get a hold of.

It sounds like the CL automatic may actually be bad though.

i had a 99 TL, bought it used from a infiniti dealer with 89K miles on it. Drove it for about a week, the shifting was a bit rough, took it to an acura dealer and had them replace the tranny. Acura extended the warranty on the trannys til 100K miles.
there are a lot of CL/TL's around right before the 100K mark.....chances are they are getting rid of it before the 100K warranty is up.
The fact that Honda even extended the warranty on the tranny to 100K says something........

Damn its such a shame that such a great looking car could have such a notorious problem. I was looking into them because you can grab an '01-'02 for $15-16K.
Do the non Type-S's have the same problem?

We had a CL-S with the auto tranny and had no problems. We only had about 40,000 on it when we traded it in though.
