It sure had power in the midrange, but I wish it had a larger turbo. The power kind of falls off near the top, which was a bit disappointing to me. Seems like from this thread the Stage 2 mods seem to help.
I wanted a Focus RS instead of the STI, but the wife didn't want a hatch.

I wonder if I'd feel differently about it if I'd bought one years ago, when 300hp was a crapload.

We ended up picking up a Cayman S, and it's far more fun as a daily. Oh well, at least that's one more car off the bucket list though.
Stage 2 is night and day as long as a reputable shop tunes it. About 300/350 to the wheels with catted downpipe/cbe (or full tbe) with intake and EBCS. The midrange it becomes a monster after that. In the summer with summer tires just shredding traction and acceleration from a roll. In wet/snow, unflappable traction and power. A short shifter, brake pad change, and some bilsteins makes it a completely different car.

The stock STI is boring. Stage 2 makes for an entirely different car. I would not even consider the STI if I wasn't planning for a tune and downpipe at a minimum.

My fiance daily's a '12 sti. Has cobb box and cobb turbo back w/ stage 2 on cobb accessport. Just enough power to make it fun but not enough to get you in trouble.

We just bought an '18 Lapis Blue STi this week. Test drove WRX's and they were nice, but then before we commited we drove an STi and it was a night and day difference. We will be keeping ours stock, as its plenty fast for the roads here in coastal Georgia. It was weird as the WRX/STi do not look too different on paper. $3k extra well spend (Was looking at a performance pack premium WRX also). Cross shopped with a '17 RS, but the dealer did not want to budge off MSRP.

Nice glad you like it. Not a fan of the interior of the RS

My wife mostly drives it, I drive my S. I think the STi is well put together, the stereo is nice compared to the S2000 and it has 90% of the tech that our BMW X3 had that we traded in. The 300hp is plenty, I mean it is a still mid 4 second 0-60 car lol. I dont think there is a car in the price range that will touch it (outside of the RS and Type R). We also drove a new Alfa Romeo Giulia and like I said, the base WRX.

It is a mid 4 sec 0-60 car with a drivetrain-punishing redline-clutch-drop launch. Try rolling onto the throttle below 4k rpm and it is a turd. I honestly couldn't stand driving a stock STI. It has no feel. The power delivery is flat and bland, and it feels weak because the car is so heavy. The stage 2 setup makes for an entirely different experience. It makes a miniature beast out of an econobox.

I had a 2017 wrx limited. I went to the dealer originally to buy an sti . But when I got there they just sold it. Salesmen sold me on the wrx which I was never happy after purchase .

We were seriously super close to pulling the trigger on the WRX premium with performance pack, but we were tired and had a couple other appointments. Good thing we did because even though they are not very different on paper, the driving experience is 100% different. I am even contemplating keeping the stock exhaust, it actually sounds pretty meaty.
