Finally. The first Japanese mfr. to bring an affordable diesel. Let's hope Honda and Subaru follow suit.

Got to drive my bro-in-law's VW Jetta diesel all last week in California and loved it. Amazing gas mileage, tons of room and enough power for a family vehicle / daily driver. This Mazda looks far better so I'm curious to see what kind of mileage it can get. I was getting close to 50 mpg on a continuous basis in the VW on the freeway, no problem, and that was doing 70+ mph. At 60-65 mph, it was over 50 mpg.
It has me looking even more closely at diesels for our next family vehicle, though I'm leaning more towards a Mercedes GL350 or a Q7 with TDI V6. Would love a wagon with diesel (BMW or Mercedes or Audi) but I need/want some towing capacity.
Either way, clean diesels coming to the US (and Canada) are a great thing! I'm definitely a convert.

They did some really cool things with this engine. There is a tech piece on it here that is very interesting: http://www.mazda.com/mazdaspirit/sky...kyactiv-d.html
Either way, I would love a slightly downsized version of this engine in a 2014 Mazda 3.

The engine has some real diesel innovations that we really hope succeeds... but I wonder if this non-traditional design will prove out with long term service... We have seen some past efforts in diesel innovation provide sub-par reliability and performance.

I wish. That Diesel Boxer 4 is awesome. I was hoping Subaru might use a high performance version of that motor for the next gen STi due to the CAFE standards but alas it will be gasoline with no turbo-diesel option

I'm glad the TDi's hold their value well. The MT SportWagen's resale is extremely high due to limited availability. These motors take 20k to break in but at 7k miles I'm getting 40 MPG with 50/50 city/highway. For someone with a long commute these motors are ideal. They are also rated for Bio-Diesel should you have access to it.
VW is working on a hybrid turbo diesel. When that comes out it will be MPG king for non-plug-ins. Diesels are much more efficient that gasoline motors due to running higher compression ratios. Honda and Toyota need to get with it. I'd take a Subaru or Honda over the VW any day of the week
