the lotus elise comes to the states

Your s2k will be faster.
The Elise weighs about 1700 lbs.
My s2k has twice the hp, but no where near twice the weight.
240hp to 2800 lbs = 11.6 lbs per hp
120hp to 1700lbs = 14.2 lbs per hp
120hp is pathetic especially for $38k.

For comparison.
The miata:
140hp to 2300lbs = 16.4lbs per hp.
So the elise is clearly between the s2k and miata. Closer to the miata.
Now the 190hp version of the Elise...
190hp to 1700lbs = 8.9lbs per hp. Now we are talking
Don't get them confused... We are not getting the "good" elise you see in the videos.

krazik,
If I remember correctly, the father was driving an older Elise with 137(?) HP, and his son had the upgraded model with something like 170(?) HP. Again, if I remember correctly, those little go-karts were killing us in the turns, as previously mentioned. Sure, they can't keep up in the straightaways, but at autocross, you rarely get a chance to go balls to the wall.
They are different vehicles, almost akin to the difference between an S2000 and an SLK. I would love to won one just for putt-putting around and track days, but I already risk my life enough in Michelle. I really like the body style...kind of a miz between a dune buggy and a Lamborghini

Yup, but nobody was driving a 120 hp one.
So you can't assume that because the higher HP ones do it that the crippled one will too.
I don't have all the details, but it's something to consider.
120hp in a 1700lb car for $38k is terrible. IMO

240hp - 1079lbs - probably much less than 38k fully built w/ new engine & tranny.
If you can get the engine/tranny from a totaled car, the cost is even less.

You are right about that.
I wonder why they are not bringing the more power engine here (S190 has ~ 189 hp)?

Lotus says US will only get a luxo (200lbs additional) low power, middling version with a softer suspension. The US version's power to weight ratio will likely be 3-4 lbs per HP worse than the S2000's.
Really, what's even the point of the Elise with added weight, soft suspension and poor power to weight ratio?
I've always loved the Elise, but this $40K car is far too little for way to much.

I think the Elise that I saw racing the S2000 is the 120hp version.
Sorry I don't have the video cd with me now to confirm but I am pretty sure. Anyway, we still have to see which engine the Elise is getting.
When I was shopping for one in another country, I talked to the dealer and he told me that the Exige(hardtop version of Elilse) comes from factory with 177hp(to pass regulations). However, by changing/removing one of the filters and changing the ECU, the hp jumped to 190hp. The S2000 is maxed out as it is. Don't pass on the Elise yet, depending on the engine, we may yet squeeze more power out of the little car.

Lotusclub.org is reporting that the hp will be higher...in the 150-200hp range.

or the complete article at:

A post to another forum indicates that the powerplant may be from Toyota (GT-S perhaps). 180hp would be nice.

ok, is time for me to add my point.
for what I read from the Hong Kong press, reliability is not a problem even it is a Lotus, because there are not much electronic or anything in that car. the engine and gearbox (both modify by Lotus) are from Rover, the mass production company in UK.
it is not a easy daily driving car, but there are still many people using their elise as daily driver even in bloody bad weather England.
also for what I know, fan is standard but not AC, radio need to option the install kit when you buy the car.
the base one is just fast, the VVC 111 is as fast as S2000 in low speed. but the point of Elise is handling.
strange for what I read from Hong Kong press that car doesn't have enough power to power steer like the S2000. but Elise feel much more like a go-kart than the S2000. and it is more fun to drive than the s2000. It is definily the car you should drive at least once in your life time.
the sound of Rover 1.8 can not compare to F20C's 9000 redline roar. but Elise is still a very noisy car.
the style is another huge bonus. Mk1 look like the Ferrari Dino, Mk2 is like mini version of Lotus concept M250.
if only for style and look, I think the Elise is better than s2000
