Its just the personal attacks that put people off. No place for that on any forum.
Looking back on this tread, I think its fair to say this has not been our finest hour. Our fearless moderator probably knew it would spark a debate, but I doubt he expected this.
I think I'll take a drive in my S this evening. It is a spectacular day here. I suggest you all do the same. Or, take your Miata out for a spin. Pick your poison.

These debates on here and any forum are dumb. The S is an incredible car. It is no "rocket" compared to the new Miata, even the current new miata. In STR prep the ND, if not dead even, is a bit ahead on an autox course. That is proven by recorded times at nats, solo tour events, etc.
On the street, they are both awesome. The new ND is more refined of course ... I still prefer my S.
To try to make it like one is just so much superior to the other is a huge stretch.
And to be honest, some of this argument reminds me of something you would see on a typical ricer forum. It is funny to watch ... but maddening in that you folks are doing it here. And to start throwing in political jabs over a car debate? Yeah ... ricer forum material there. Do that there .. not here.

Damn, step away for a few weeks to mess around with a Miata and come back to this? You guys are all wrong anyway. The best 2 seat convertible sports car is....American!
Behold! The Geo Metro Convertible. You think a Miata is light? The metro has a reported curb weight of only 1753 lbs. A 5 speed manual or a (am I reading this right?) THREE speed automatic. I bet the chassis is ROCK SOLID, probably harder than S2000junky's Junk after spending an hour admiring the greatness that is the HONDA S2000!
Just imagine the GASPS when you tell people that you are only rocking 3 cylinders and (seriously can someone fact check this for me?) FIFTY FIVE stampeding USDM horses. That should be plenty (probably) for anything you can do legally (depending on speed limits in your state).
Did I hear someone ask about FUEL ECONOMY, the Geo has it in spades. Get ready to hear panties (and boxers) drop when you drop this figure: FORTY THREE M P G. It's like stepping back into time to the days when a $20 bill would fill your whole tank.
So seriously guys (and girls, possibly), we can put this whole debate to rest and go ahead and rename this sub-forum GEO METRO TALK.

Nobody is going to point out that a Miata is a chick's car?

Spectator here jumping in to say that I love the "Car Talk" sub-forum. You guys/gals(?) are one of the primary remaining reasons I still visit this site.
To stay on topic. I love the ND. Given modern safety standards, market demands, and other requirements Mazda has accomplished a genuinely impressive feat with this car. And frankly the latest MX-5 may be one of the last of its kind in this day and age. I'm excited to see / test drive the higher HP power plant; likely in RF guise. It'll never replace my AP1, but it would sure make a fantastic daily "fun" commuter. Just hope the earlier transmission issues have been laid to rest.
Carry on.
