Default My Review of the 997.1 Turbo 6MT

My first Porsche review and hopefully not my last. Just 5 minutes behind the wheel made me realize why the Turbo is always the industry benchmark for daily drivable supercar, much like the NSX was the standard in the early 90's. Difference is, the Turbo was improved drastically over the years while the NSX's minor improvements over 15 years made it (arguably) noncompetitive by the 2000's.

Can't wait to get my hands on a 996/997 GT3!

I had to get rid of mine because I was dangerously close to getting a reckless driving ticket and losing my license. Just way too much fun and too easy to break the laws in VA in it.

*edit* Hard for me to watch the video cuz I miss mine so much. However, your channel is pretty varied so I'll be checking out the other videos

I can see why. Nearly 500 lb*ft of torque at 1950rpm is no joke. Makes a C6 Corvette feel like it lacks torque.

Bingo, +1 subscriber!

The more cars I own and drive, the more I realize that while I yearn for high-rpm screamers like the S2k, what I truly like on the street is big torque, provided the engine doesn't run out of breath at high rpms (major buzzkill). Driving a last-gen CTS-V and riding in a current Z06 made me giggle like a schoolgirl. You feel like God, just way more powerful than the drivers around you in whatever gear you happen to be in.

Ideally I'd like a daily driver with huge torque but retain the high rpm screamer in a weekend/track car. I've driven many different cars in the past year of Youtube reviews but my preference for high revving NA in a sports car hasn't changed, somewhat to my surprise.

Zygrene have you tested a C6Z yet? Best of both worlds.

Awesome car and review. IIRC the Turbo 997 did not have seal and IMS issues. Or was it just the GT2?

I would love to own that car. Couple surgeons at work own 991 Turbos. They park next to each other... with an R8 in between.

Ive been shopping for a 997 GT3 for two years now.

Back in 2012 they were going for used for about 90-110K

We are in a stupid Porsche bubble right now where the cost of a GT3 is about 140K+

I have and the video is on my channel. I used my old format of Gopro-strapped-to-forehead so I'll refrain from posting it here haha. It's embarrassing.

Regardless, that car scared the sh*t out of me. Ridiculous low end torque and still plenty of top end power. Easily broke the rear tires loose just shifting from 1st to 2nd. However, it's just too much for the street. I didn't enjoy driving it very much in the canyons. The car really belongs on a racetrack. But mad respect for how much performance it offers, especially for the price.

Yeah I'm pretty sure the 997 Turbo did not have IMS issues. It's known for being quite reliable. But don't quote me on this.

My close friend's father purchased a pristine yellow 997.1 GT3 back in 2014 with 30-40k miles. I'll just say that he would easily enjoy 20% or more on his investment if he sold it today. It's a bummer though, because it's now a garage queen.
