Interesting to note that Honda is only 15% better than industry average and Toyota is 22% better. In short, just about any brand that's over industry average is good. It would be nice if they broke out the different cars. For instance, I don't expect the Mercury version of a car to be any more reliable than the Ford version. However, Ford is rated lower. That could mean that the Ford's to avoid are the ones that don't share a platform with a Mercury. Based on this data, any Mercury would be a safe bet. Ford is less safe but I suspect the sibbling cars are equal. It's possible say the Econoline van is pulling down the Ford average. I'm certain that's the case for Chevy. Even Consumer Reports (bless their biased hearts) says that GM's quality ranges from Toyota/Honda good to bad. So the question is which vehicles are good or bad. That one bit of information is the one thing that I like about CR. They will tell you individual cars rather than whole brands. Afterall, if it's just one vehicle in a lineup that's bad I don't want to pass on the whole lineup.

Lexus, Toyota and Honda models dominate the segment rankings. Lexus models lead in four segments: GS 300/GS 430 (midsize premium car), LS 430 (large premium car), SC 430 (premium sporty car) and GX 470 (midsize premium MAV). Four Toyota models also lead in their respective segments: Echo (sub-compact car), RAV4 (compact MAV), Highlander (midsize MAV) and Tundra (large pickup).
Honda models rank highest in three segments: Civic (compact car), S2000 (compact premium sporty car) and Odyssey (van). Models by Acura, Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, Ford, Mazda, Mercury and GMC each rank highest in one segment.
MINI and Kia are the most improved brands in the study, although both continue to rank below the industry average. MINI, which was first included in the VDS in 2005, earns a 103 PP100 (27 percent) year-over-year improvement. Kia has improved twice as much as any other brand in the past three years, improving 87 PP100 (22 percent) from 2005.
The 2006 Vehicle Dependability Study is based on responses from 47,620 original owners of 2003 model-year vehicles.

Glad to see Mercury near the top - even though they no longer sell a Cougar, I still have a soft spot for them. It's unusual to see Lincoln ranked below Mercury. Wonder what's up with that?
Glad to see the S2000 top-ranked in class again.
Ford didn't have many top-by-class vehicles, but had a suprising number in top three. Thunderbird (no longer made), Mustang, Crown Victoria, F150, F250/350. Not bad at all.
I'm also glad to see the Miata top-ranked as well. Since the overall Mazda brand is generally ranked Below Average, some of their other cars must be real stinkers.

Based on 2003 model vehicles. Expect those Toyota/Lexus rankings to take a dip in the future with all the recalls they've had the past couple of years.
