I owned an '80 911. I've owned many cars since, but the S2000 is the one that reminds me most of that car. Very mechanical and direct. I sometimes described the 911 as agricultural', but not in a bad way.

I've owned a few, most recently a 2010 C2S, outstanding car for sure!!!! That said I decided to go with something I knew I would drive more so I went S2000, I almost bought a 987.2 Spyder.

My my biggest regret with this 911 is I got it perfect mod wise and then sold it to pay for a backyard makeover/pool.

I haven't driven one since the late 60s. I wonder if a lot of what pulls me to the cars might be more about the allure of the Porsche brand, than it is about any actual handling performance and driving experience advantages over the S. I just don't know because I've never driven a modern Porsche. They certainly are very attractive cars.

The new ones, especially 911 but also the Boxster and Cayman all seem a little big to me. I wouldn't want to trade my S2000 for a Porsche but I do envy Porsches in a few circumstances:
  • Winter. I put my S2000 away. The salt in Chicago would kill it. I love how Porsche sports cars are good year round.
  • The only thing I don't like about the S2000 is that its not a good GT car. On the highway in one doing 80 mph at 4500 rpm for any length of time gets tiring.
The beauty of Porsches is just how good they are all around. Highway, twisties, track. Any weather. The 911 and Cayman even have decent trunk space. As for old Porsches I'd love to have a go in an air cooled. Not sure I'd want the expense of daily driving one compared to a Honda, but if money was no object maybe.

Now the Lotus Elise, or something like a Caterham, yeah, I do envy those. Not sure I'd want to drive them every day like my S2000...

You can't compare the s2k to a 911. Entirely different class machine.
It's not even really fair to compare one to a modern boxster or cayman. Dynamically they are far superior and a very engaging driving experience.
What makes the s2k special is in that it's sort of in a class of it's own now.
If something happened to my S4 I'd probably look at a P car replacement 4S... really love those new Targa 4S's... mmmmmm

This is what I was hoping NOT to hear. Do I go to the grave never having owned one? Can you lease them?

If you are going to get one I suggest a 2009-2011, let someone else take the hit on them. I got my 2010 2 years old with 3K miles for $30K under MSRP. An older Doctor leased it for 2 years. I was actually

I just went to the local dealer's web site. They sure are pretty. But, too rich for my blood. Guess I'll have to hire a therapist and treat the syndrome in a different way.

Also, after looking at the specs on these cars there is no question they put a lot of focus on power which is not what draws me to sports cars. A stock s2k has all the power I need or desire. I'm sure it is an entire package - but - that is my story and I'm stickin' to it.

I think I would rather own a nicely restored old english sports car like an Austin or a Triumph or something. Hmmmm.

My friends with P cars always ask me when I'm going to trade up, but even they admit the S2000 is one of the best roadsters ever made and can't make any real argument why I should, other than to have a Porsche.

That said, I think a Porsche is the best next step from an S2000, but if I had to replace mine today, I think I'd look for an 08-09 S2000 before I considered any Porsche.

It's fun beating up on Porsches while at the track.
