Default TOYOTA movin' on up...

Just heard on CNN that Toyota is going to move ahead of Ford to being 2nd largest automaker in the world. That's amazing, considering Toyota is all by itself, and Ford is comprised of many different automakers; same with GM. And Toyota has only existed for about half the life of both of those. Hopefully, they'll come out with many more exciting cars for buyers to choose from. As of now, their cars are very boring, though very reliable and quality cars, but boring none the less.

Toyota and Honda are doing extremely well these days, while most others are losing huge revenues. Honda is also movin' on up. So, as long as they keep making quality cars like they've been, they'll keep on moving on up. Other Japanese automakers like Nissan and Maszda are partially owned by others because their cars weren't quality enough, so they got into financial troubles. 10% of Mazda owned by Ford; about 30% of Nissan owned by Renault. Toyota and Honda cannot simply be bought because they're doing very well, and are giants. So the lesson from this is: If you build it with quality, they will come.

I think they are #2 in the US already ahead of Ford, but worldwide with Ford Europe, Jaguar, Volvo etc... They may still be behind a little.

Well, Toyota is #1 in Japan followed by a very distant second: Honda (according to Businessweek).

As a former Toyota owner, I left them because of the mr2 for Honda's s2000 and NSX.

I think Toyota would surpass Honda convincingly and not look back if they continued to produce mid engine, MR2's or an NSX like Toyota, instead of a solara rag top.

Or created a direct competitor to the s2000 ?

or put their R&D into something similar to an s2000 instead of a revamped supra ?

just my $.02..

Toyota isn't #2 in the US. But it all depends how you do the counting...

They are 3rd in light vehicle sales by division behind Ford (#1) and Chevy (#2).

By manufacturer, they are #4 behind GM, Ford, DC.

In car sales (so, not including "light trucks", ie minivans, SUV's, pickups), they became #1 by division and #3 by manufacturer.

In Europe, they are the #1 selling Japanese car, and are making a move, but are still well below VW, PSA, Ford, Renault, GM, Fiat, DC in that order.

Honda is almost in the noise in Europe, behind Nissan, Hyundai and Mazda.
