All new models launched from 2019 will be fully electric or hybrids
How did you miss the very first sentence of the article?

Considering how well Volvo is performing SE Asia and clawing back to their highest sales levels in the US; Volvo is being clever with this route. They haven't been "an engine" marque in passenger cars for some time. Heck they're already down to almost only 2L engines across the board. Would feel a lot safer driving an electric Volvo than a Tesla. Not sure I'd be quick to buy a hybrid car. I would certainly consider a lease on one and Volvo has good leases.

I believe that Volvo is now owned by Geely, which is a Chinese company. So, maybe doing well in SE Asia is to be expected.

That is certainly part; better distribution and presence... The styling and brand ethos of Volvo has also emerged over time into something more stylish & hip than it was. More are buying Volvo on looks alone than they were 10-15 years ago.

Volvo has a LONG way to go to return to their former sales glory. Their sales in 2016 were 83,000. That's lower than their sales in 1991 and well below their sales peak of 139,000 in 2004.

This story was actually worth reading (unlike much on that site these days):http://jalopnik.com/how-volvo-lost-the-plot-1796486519

This is just a market stunt, a pretty good one though

I can see the stunt part but I wouldn't be so sure it's only that - the market is trending to hybrid or full electric, and I think Volvo, which essentially already is selling electric hybrids, is just planning to continue to do more of the same.

China from what what I've read has decided as a state to push electric vehicles in hopes of becoming the "old Detroit" of new cars, so for Geely to make this announcement jives with that too. The Chinese auto industry is finally getting all the pieces needed to be a world competitor, assuming Volvo doesn't sink into the quality swamp that claimed MG and pretty much all Chinese makes today.
