100mph crash was very scary looking. They should show that clip to teenagers.

That's not scary enough to garner a reaction, to be perfectly frank. No one was in the car, so who really would get emotional. This is the stuff shown to teenagers:

Not sure I follow you. When was both the mass and mometum doubled?

Anyway, Great post! My money was on 50 mph results. I figured equal and opposite masses and speed would cancel each other out and the result would be 0 additional force either way, i.e.: a wall. But that was all speculation - I might as well have flipped a coin.

And BTW, this is why I dislike curent government crash tests head-on into a wall. If a Miata and an Expedition both have 5-star ratings for frontal collisions (for example - I don't know what their actual ratings are), that doesn't mean they're both equally safe since in theory the Miata was crashed against another Miata while the Expedition was crashed into another Expedition. But crash the Miata against the Expedition and we'll see if they're both equally safe. In real life you rarely crash straight into a wall, but often into oncoming cars.

I'm glad that the damage wasn't doubled in the test. I'd be shopping for a Hummer right now of it was.
You went from 1 car to 2 cars. Double the mass.

You went from 1 car going to 50mph to 2 cars going 50mph. Momentum = mass * velocity. Double the mass * the same velocity = double the momentum.

Change in momentum = Force * time in contact. Since this is a collision, not a deflection or an explosion, time will be held constant. Change in momentum is going to be equal to initial momentum since we're stopping at 0 momentum. We'll call the time spent in contact t. It's a constant.

1 Car:
M = F * t
F = M/t

2 Cars:
2M = F * t
F=2M/t

In the second case, that force must be distributed between the 2 cars, so each car is acted upon by a force equal to that of acting on the single car in the first scenario.

This has nothing directly to do with the Newton's Third Law. It's much more closely related to his second law.

This is why I'll never buy my kid a 10 year old econobox as his first car.

I think that anyone would be ****ed in any car at 100mph. Bigger and presumably safer cars (safer in terms of having more mass and then hitting a smaller car) will have their mass working against them.

If you were talking about a Honda Odyssey that has the crash protection of a 3500 vehicle and you gut it down to 2000 lbs, sure maybe it would fair better than an econobox, but I assure that in a real world scenario, both would be screwed.

Wow, I use to have that econobox a few years ago as my daily driver, it's a 2001 Daewoo Nubira.

What's scary is my parents were in a near head on accident last week in a 2006 Mazda 6 and it had similar damage to the 50mph vs Wall video.

Luckily they made it out alive, dad with a bruised chest, mom with fractured toe, sprained knee and sprained wrist. Definitely could have been worst, now the headache of dealing with car and health insurance since the other driver is denying fault and made his passenger to a false police report pretending to be a witnessed while my parents were being rushed to the hospital. Parents clearly remember 2 people in the other car while police report states one. Interesting that the driver is a hispanic male and the ONLY witness documented is a hispanic male who was riding shotgun...bastards hope they go to hell leaving me with all types of bills to cover for my parents.
