Default WRX in your mirror? Get out of the way

Interesting read. I'm surprised the S2000 wasn't mentioned!

Lots more details here - you can click loss rankings by type of claim, or type of car. Check out medical payments - 1/2 the top 10 lowest claims list were sports cars!

That is somewhat surprising about the WRX.

What surprised me more was that the Pontiac Solstice was no. 2 on the best to insure list.

I suspect that is because the sold to some of the same Sunny Sunday drivers who bought many Miatas. I suspect the Miata, Solstice and Corvette are all far more likely to be fair weather, non-commuter cars. One of the attributes of the WRX is the ability to be a sports car and a practical car at the same time. It makes for a great only car but that also means it's more likely to be used all the time and in poor weather. I'm sure there is more to it that just that but it would be contributory.

I was about to say this very thing that's mentioned in the article:

That may ultimately be the problem with the WRX - it's not the car, it's the people who drive it. After all, Edmunds Straightline notes, the WRX offers a lot of horsepower for a low price. "Build a performance car and price it low enough for younger drivers to afford, and then, the insurance companies step into to ruin the fun," they comment.
For some reason WRX/STi and EVO drivers around here are douche-o-listic and dick-tacular.

It is completely true. At least with my experience. My wife has an 06 Miata. I have an 01 S2000. Both cars paid cash, no tickets, exact same coverage on the same policy. She commutes to work. I work at home. The insurance for the Miata is 60% of the insurance on the S2000.

Actually, that would be 70%, and the power to weight ratio is only 12% better.

Maybe the real problem is that the S2000 has more power w/ less brakes? Or less skilled drivers, maybe?

My Insurance premiums have shocked me, and it all has to do with demographics. Here's how things stacked up for me since the S2000 (the most expensive car I've ever insured):

2001 S2000 - Most Expensive ever
2002 M3 - a good $300 less than the S2000 (turned 25 in this car)
2007 Cayman S (new) - about $100 less than the M3 on a 6 month premium
1997 Landcruiser - almost as much as the S2000!
2006 M5 - less than the Landcruiser by about $200 for 6 months
2010 S5 - $200 less than the M5 on a 6 month premium....the cheapest car to insure I've ever owned
