They are noiser du to the sapce in the back being like an amplifier!
RE the pace of the car, the 2.5 is significantly smoother, so you dont feel the shove anymore unfortunately. So although you are really moving, you wont notice it much. Im not a fan of that feeling. The 2L was nice and peaky!
Now where the smart money can be, is to get your WRX Ecutek Remapped which wont affect warranty, as they cant detect it. Its what the PPP was based on but some very clever guys were doing this before Prodrive took it onboard too. You are looking at a good hike in power!

I think the WRX is fast becoming the 8v GTI of the Subaru range. Things are moving on, it's getting heavier, and it's not quick enough. It's the entry level one then.

I changed our CTR for a WRX Wagon .... which lasted about 2 minutes before it got the PPP treatment. It's only a 2L one but does go quite well. Nowhere near the fun factor of a S2K - and a million miles away from the looks !
As far as the performance of the 2.5 goes .... When I test drove some (albeit 2L ones) the difference in performance seemed directly related to the number of miles on each. A new one with 1200 miles was so tight and slow it was untrue. I tried one with 22K on it and it felt like a F1 car in comparison. I ended up with a 10K example which again has loosened up considerably now at 16K ......
The PPP is expensive but retains warranty. On my car it made a considerable difference to the way it goes and IMO is the way a WRX should be as standard. It is much easier to insure than an aftermarket remap and though it will not be quite as quick it is VERY noiceable compared to standard on a WRX.
A WRX has soft suspension (though not VW soft), soft brakes and awful looks. That said, it has good 4WD and at least in PPP form goes well.
The STi is much firmer everywhere and goes like a PPP'd WRX as standard. Put the PPP on an STi and I can't see ow anyone couldn't find it fun!
I would not look at the saloon as I needed an estate / touring type load space + could not drive around having that HUGE spoiler on the back !!!
To end my rambling reply I do not now need the extra luggage space of the Wagon .... look at what I am now after - an STi Spec - D .... made for the UK market with normal coloured alloy's, normal rear spoiler, leather seats and a sat nav. Dear at the moment but fits what I want exactly. Get the PPP on it and you have 300+ bhp with 4wd at your disposal....
