911 Carrera for the week...
I'm in cyprus at the moment and have use of the 'family' 911 Carrera Cabrio (996). Its a non S car and has been an interesting comparison to the S2000.
Went for a nice 50 mile trip today (nice flowing country roads free from traffic) so had chance to stretch its legs nicley within reason....
First thoughts that the porker not much quicker than the S.....not much, but of course quicker....at 5k+ rpm, the 911 seems a little wanting (IMO), obvioulsy used to the pull of the S within VTEC. From 2-6k rpm however there is no contest, the torque clearly showing its worth and does make for easier overtaking (and safer i guess).
Its been on my mind to consider changing as now doing in the region of 4-5k miles a year and do not rely on a car for my work. When I bought the S I needed a car for work so had to be reliable and relatively cheap to run. Now my situation has changed, the prospect of 911 ownership (maybr cayman S) is a real pull.
In short however, would i change my S for a 99-2001 966.....probably not. The car feels a bit dated inside and not as tight and precise as the S, although it does have a lot more character in my opinion and sounds great. For a 997 or a cayman, i'm sure would be a different answer buy for the time being the S is here to stay.
Just my initial thoughts....

The 3.4 996 engine is relatively widely acknowledged as (shut your eyes Jamie) a bit well toss. It was their 1st attempt at a water cooled engine though. Not to mention it was a cabrio......
You have to be a brave man to drive a 911 cab as you can hear people calling you a wa*ker. Or a girl of course. I don't mind the car but do know several people who have sold them for this exact reason
