Default A303

Hello all, Just a quickie - i'm heading to Weston-super-mare this friday from Woking - was hoping to make a drive of it, but someone told me the A303 is no longer much fun due to lots of campers and cameras meaning that often a decent overtake is impossible.

Does anyone know if this it true?! if so can anyone suggest a 'fun' route down to WSM?

Friday afternoon on the A303 westbound is fecking awful. Avoid it like the plague. You do get to see more of the Stonehenge pigs though.

A4 from Newbury, then A361, then just plug some backroads into a sat nav...

Cheers Lovegroova - I could get on board with that...! do you know if they're nice free flowing roads, or built up?

The A4 is lovely - quite wide with decent overtaking opportunities but is slower through the towns like Marlborough, and the 361 through Devizes is a bit of a pain. Have a look for some routes around and you may have some fun.

It's gorgeous countryside, so leave yourself plenty of time and enjoy the sights, sounds and smells.

Google maps, ITN converter and a decent sat nav with Itinerary planning/custom routes are your friends.

Awesome - I was thinking that i was going to have to rely on some old school navigation as tom tom wasn't going to be on board with a fun route, but that saves the hassle!

Cheers mate.

get off the A303 before you get to the junction just before Stonehenge

on the hill up to Stonehenge you can be stuck for an hour and after that any nice bits are cancelled out zero overtaking and jam stretches

a good road spoiled
