Default Accord type r

Just picked up a Accord type r to turn in to a track day car, Has any one else had one and know any good tuning advice. will probably start by striping all the interior and fitting some elise seats.

Any advice is appreciated

Thanks
Nick

I couldn't believe how cheap they are now! H22 is a great lump too, might fancy ditching the balance shaft and auto belt tensioner whilst you're there if its gonna do track work, lightened flywheel makes a difference too!

I don't think adding stripes to the interior will make it any lighter.

Just a few snaps, we have been looking at a few bits and pieces and the jdm spc accord wheels look like a good bet being light weight and 16in as well maybe with some r888's

I had one for 8 or so years not a bad old bus, didnt have too many issues with it but speak to the ever helpful and knowledgable Andy at vtec direct he used to track one(dont know if he still does) so may be able to advise on decent brakes etc.

I'm here.

Atr's are great motors (not like I'm biased ) seriously though ours has done 206k (last 20 of those being flat out 100 lap track days) and never misses a beat. To be fair though the oil (shell helix ultra) and filter are dropped after every track session to keep the internals in shape.

Upgrades recommended for track use would be:

1. De-cat. I have a spare lambda sensor spacer (if you want one) to keep it away from the gases and tripping the ecu light on. (£15 incl. P&P). Decatting makes a big noticeable power gain on track and helps the gearing problem with the atr (vetec drop out when shifting up the gears on full throttle). Cheap job to do (mine was 65 quid at local exhaust specialist).

2. S2000 injectors. Huge gain. Loads more low down torque. Cheap to obtain (seen them as low as £70 in the past). Less power in vetec as without mapping you are running rich/over fuelling. No probs with bore wash though if you are on track as its running flat out. Slight deterioration in mpg but nothing worth worrying about to compared to the torque gains. When we rolling roaded I saw gains of over 10 ft on the lower cam . In short a must.

3. Suspension - I'd go the coil over route. Fit rear camber arms as well (helps the rear but wears the insides of your tyres out ) standard atr suspension way too soft for regular track work.

4. Jays ultra front under brace. Like a piece of scaffolding but we couldn't believe how this improved the turn in. Transforms the car making the front end turn in like a Westfield (honest Ron) cost around £150 but worth every penny. Get a top brace too although I didn't feel much improvement with just the top. Rear brace another although I didn't as I was told it would make the rear more twitchy (not good for my old fella who shares the drive).

5. Long ram intake. Like s2k improves the engine intake noise no end and a few extra bhp.

6. Sports exhaust & custom vtec direct manifold. Sounds the biz and more power.

7. Final drive. Amazing difference. Car never drops out of vtec once done. Not cheap to do but makes the car much quicker (5 secs) round oulton. Acceleration quicker with reduced top end.

8. Brakes. Grooved and vented discs all round from brakes international (no drill holes thank you ). Ferodo ds2500 pads all round. Cure by doing 2 or 3 fast laps til the pedal goes spongey then pit. Admire the pads smoking like a barbecue for half an hour then go for it. They will do 200 laps without any fade (unless you are riding the brakes ). Braided lines all round and some good brake fluid also

Tyres. If you have deep pockets go ad08/ao48's and you have ultimate grip. For longevity and smiles per mile on the wallet I use Avon zz3. I find these to be the perfect wet dry all round tyre which are cheap enough, last well and give decent grip.

think that's about it
