Default Advice for my mate...

My mate has recently sold his Cayman S and has set his mind on an RS4 as he needs extra space since he now has a baby! He's spotted this one on pistonheads and seems keen to go and have a look. I've said to him that i'm not convinced this is the one to go for but thought i'd get him some extra opinions!

Its not too far from Sheffield so we might go up at the weekend but i've said i'd be worried about:

A) The mileage is 54000, which is fairly high (I know motorway miles arent bad but he also has a Passat company car)
B) The fact hes' got coilovers on, surely the standard suspension would be fine for road use so would this indicate a fair amount of track time? (he has told my mate its been on a couple of trips to the Ring)
C) Two sets of the same wheels seems excessive (so maybe for some track tyres?)
D) Its the cheapest one on pistonheads, which i would never buy the cheapest.

Any thoughts?

Jim

Surprisingly chavved-looking not to say 'leggy' for such a relatively recent model. Unless your mate's budget tops out at

It does look hilariously like an old JDM Ricer-Civic.

I think its the slammed (with loadsa camber) on black wheels and the awful Postal Red/black combo. The long front overhang makes it look like a broken Citro

I apologise to the owner of that EK; it's not slammed and it's a nicer red!

I must be seeing it differently!

It's a standard RS4 with some aftermarket suspension (which get added to all makes and models)

The wheels do seem to have had the M3 treatment, but again, why is a subtle mod to an RS4 different from anything else?

The oem suspension has been notouriously problimatical. the DRC system leaks on a high number of cars. If you log onto rs246.com there is loads of info about the suspension. Some people have replaced the whole system as outside of warranty it costs around 5k to replace. However I was amoung a group of people who wrote to audi to complain about the systems shortfall and managed to get the warranty on the DRC (dynamic ride control) system covered for a further 2 years from the date of registration. I personally would pay an additional 4 or 5k and get a 2007 car in warranty with the extended drc warranty.
I owned 2007 saloon from new for just over a year and they are superb cars its just the DRC system is the weak component.

Your pal is looking at the wrong car, the RS4 is not practical for family type stuff at all back seats are nowhere near large enough, the boot isn't all that big and the boot lip will get in the way of the buggy etc which will scuff the paint. A far better more practical car for the job is the M5 Touring, you might struggle to get a good one for that money but the running costs wouldn't be a million miles off, the mpg would be significantly better, the residuals would be better and the car would be more suited to the task of the family wagon that goes like fack.

This is all my opinion of course and I do very much want to buy one but the lack of grip in snow for me is an issue so I need 4wd and that's why I have an Audi.

I looked a buying an Avant and had planned putting the KW's on when the DRC gives up!
Looks fairly standard other than the powder coated wheels.
It's got the black optics pack which looks good.
Boab is right on the practicality of the saloon though.
He may be better off with an Avant.
IMHO that looks expensive for the mileage.
