Did you not sign the contract on the rent-a-car that said you will be responsible for paying any such charges? I thought there was a clause when I signed my deal with AVIS.

Sorry, back OT...

I have read somewhere, but can't find it now, that if you have unpaid fines in a country, re-entry to that country can be difficult (entry refused, or detention) until the fines are paid .

Also, as mentioned above, the hire company may have an issue with you, which may lead to your being blacklisted, either by that company alone, or by the industry in general.

I think the above is worth checking before permanent 'filing'.

If it was sent by normal mail ie. not signed for, I'd ditch it.

If you are stopped on returing to Spain, or hire car company threatens you, then just plead ignorance and say you haven't received anything.

You could of course do the 'right thing' and pay the fine. £90 or thereabouts is hardly a life-changing sum...

Bin it I'd say.

Spain gets more than enough of your money via the EU for infrastructure development.

It was not sent via registered post, and we've had postal strikes of late. Things always go missing during a postal strike

I would imagine Spain would start to chase the hire car company at some point.

Ignore this but don't ignore any comms from the car hire folk.

It was a 'signed for' letter. However neither I - nor my wife - signed for it. Just appeared on the mat.

I think I'll wait it out. If it gets heavier I may reconsider.
