Thumbs up "Auto Gauges" multi-coloured gauge

I have just bought one of these for my V8 Land Rover conversion, as the original water temp gauge has packed up:

Gauge

Now, I am no stranger to wiring in gauges. This gauge is the electronic type and hence i would expect the following connections to be on the back of it:

Pos supply
Earth
Signal - to sender
Instrument lighting
...and maybe a chassis earth

The wiring diagram is crap, but as far as i can tell, it goes like this:

"+" Screw terminal on gauge - to ign switched +12V
"-" Screw terminal on gauge - To Earth
"S" Screw terminal on gauge - To Sensor
Purple Wire - Instrument Lighting +12V
Black Wire - Earth
Yellow Wire - ?
Orange Wire - ?

Clueless bit #1: There are 2 wire coming out of the sensor. I was expecting it to be earthed through the sensor body. Do i connect red sensor wire to terminal "S" and black sensor wire to Earth? (fairly sure this is a good plan).

Clueless bit #2: The diagram shows the yellow and orange wires going to some random oval shapes - nothing i recognise as components. Apparently, this gauge has 7 different lighting colours. I presume that these wires are something to do with that, as the button on the front of the gauge does nothing when pressed. To what (if anything) do i connect these 2 wires? NB: I really don't care about the 7 colours, but if i can get it working, at least i can make it green like the rest of the gauges.

Testing so far:

I have tried shorting the yellow and orange wires, but nothing happens.
If i put 12V across the + / - terminals and the instrument lighting wires, i get a red backlight, but would prefer to be able to change it to green...

Educated guesses are of course always welcome, but i would prefer an answer from someone who has wired one of these in before.

Incidentally, there is an S2000 on the packaging!

Ah ok

Well I agree with your method in point 1.

All gauges i've fitted needed their own earth. The link you put up doesn't appear to be working but are you using a temp sensor which came with it, or reusing the existing one?

I presume the sensor it is def the gauge which was buggered...

I'd guess the orange and yellow wires need a power and an earth, and the dial on the front adjusts the voltage to give you the colour?

But it's a guess

Is the manual really bad?
