Default Battery Charger

Guys, my car battery is dead!

I've tried an 'Optimiser' battery charger on it which says it is not accepting the charge.

I wondered if there was any super dooper charger I could buy to stick on that would charge it up even from the dead!

Otherwise, any other recommendations, or is a new battery the only way forward?

Hi San!

I bought one of these to keep the NSX battery in good fettle over the winter - apparently chargers don't come much better.

Having said that, batteries have a finite life and there are limits to what can and can't be brought back from the dead!

Ian, have you ever had to charge it up from dead? Or just kept it charged?

I charged it up from 'so dead it wouldn't even light the interior light' dead

It took about 48 hours before it flipped into 'conditioning' mode.

Advice from my mate in Derbyshire who has run his own garage for 30 odd years:

A really flat battery often needs a serious current for a while to stir it to life,
so jumper it to a car at 2000rpm or so with a brick on the accelerator.

Give it 15-20 minutes or so of high amperage,
then Optimate or similar for 48 hours.

---------------
Worked for me.

But it was a good battery,
Exide, and known to be < 1 year old.

Optimate alone just wouldn't/couldn't kick it back to life.

HTH.
----------
edit: that CTEK XS3600 would perform a similar function and looks

I didn't think a standard Optimate was enough to charge a car - Oxford and some other places sell battery optimisers similar to the Optimate which condition both car and bike batteries - I will probably get one when I get a second bike so I can also use it on that funny 4 wheeled pram thing I have in the garage.

Top device.

Recharged a very dead battery very effectively.
