Ok some experiences so far

Buying experience

Did plenty of homework.

We were looking for a facelift M5 (late 2000 onwards) with full comms pack.

We looked at approximately 11 M5's in total. 9 from dealers (1 BMW dealer) and 2 from private sales.

The paintwork seems generally good on most examples. The most striking differences are the interior. Upon looking it really shows how peoples opinion of "immaculate" varies considerably.

Ended up doing a private transaction from a guy in Chester. He was an extremely nice bloke and is seriously into cars. He owns a beautiful example of an approx. 20 y.o 911 (sorry not too up on variants) which is immaculate.

He let me drive it before purchasing which was very bold of him.

Picked it up last Friday night. We arrived and he was polishing the car for us.

BMW Dealers

I am not looking forward to dealing with these people at all.

I had an Approved Used Car check (AUC) done before buying at BMW in Chester. This costs

Yes, an MX5

He was next to me on my 2nd favourite set of traffic lights (A56 coming into Altrincham at the end of the DC over the r'about for those of you that know it- 2 lanes into 1).

It was raining.

I floored it in 2nd. TC was lighting up like a xmas tree.

MX5 was a speck in the rear view mirror. Respec-he had the hood down and it was "that fine rain which soaks you right through"

These things are getting far too common.....

Only joking, congrats on the purchase, I really like them, park next to one most days. If I thought I could afford the running costs, it would be top of my used car list.

Looks like a good one Nigel

Bottomless torque and refinement are the two characteristics I keep coming back to

Am averaging 19/20 over about 6,000 miles - can recommend the Tesco 99 ron super juice

Dont forget to check the oil regularly - they can use none or suddenly lots - just like the S

The power is enough to deal with anything short of a supercar but you'll also enjoy surprising sports car owners in the twisties.....

Anyone who thinks it's unable to cope with those conditions is naive - although B roads are unsuitable due to the size

Thanks for the heads up.

I have managed to find out quite a bit of info on the VANOS unit-basically to do with air mass meters and also not replacing the full unit. A damn site cheaper than the full monty.

Lee-I'll be along hopefully to the NW meet.
