I taught my son to drive in the car and found the rev counter useful in explaining when to change gears...in a way likely to help pass his test!

The only thing it lacks ( Apart from a decent boot ) is powerrrrrrrr but then with good planning and a bit of gear swapping you can make really decent progress.
I've never understood peoples desire for 'big' cars unless they have kids. It's why I love the S2000 and it's why I loved the Micra. They are as much car as you need, no more.

Like you said it's not even just the costs you save not carting about hundreds of kilograms of phallus symbolism, smaller lighter cars are just plain fun to drive.

And in all honesty having driven a Micra and Corsa with 3 full size adults in the back, if it isn't a regular occurrence it ain't that bad.

I wonder how many big car drivers actually look at the cost of a hire car offset from the savings of a smaller car for the few occasions a small car doesn't cut it.

I'd agree with that. Less is so often more.

Except...there's something rather charming about drifting the Legend round wet roundabouts in total bloody pampered, peel-me-a-grape luxury. It's oddly addictive.

Not sure which side of my point you're challenging

That bikes are better than a small car even, or the need of a big car to tow.

Bike argument first, I don't want a stranger seeing through my corneas.

Big car argument, couldn't any old diesel hatch tow that?

Must have had it 3 weeks or so now - I can't remember, it has all blurred together. Not really driven the S2000 much at all. The only things i've done to it are Rainx on the windows, lights and mirrors, a set of mats to protect the carpets, a set of mudguards to protect the lower paint and a set of sill guards to protect the sills. I was going to transfer my radio / sub over but didn't bother, once you use Bluetooth to stream music, the higher quality source improves the sound quality through the speakers no end. Not having to cart a radio fascia around is heaven!

According to the fuel pump maths - averaging 59 mpg and that's not driving it particularly gently. My advice is, if you need a beater, don't bother. Buy an Aygo instead, it's just better in every way.

Eyes on the new one http://www.topgear.c...rive-2014-03-15 and also on the new Twingo ( RWD ) which might also be fun but for now, very happy with this.

Still costs more than true bangornomics.

My Micra cost £400, ran for 8 months, scrapped for £100. Total cost per month £37.50. No amount of fuel economy or cheap tax in a car I do at most 600 miles a month in can fill in that monthly cost defecit.

The trick is to avoid anything French, or Italian. German is also in this day and age not really ideal. Don't even get me started on any 'British' options. Korean may have the base reliability and have been owned by old people, but if anything does go wrong parts are too costly.

The answer is always MX5 Japanese.

Yep - before i bought the Aygo i spotted a 1.3SR Micra , few dings and dents but < 50k miles and one owner - £695. Was sorely tempted but the Aygo won me over, the main reason is that working hard, it IS nice to be in something that has some creature comforts after a long day or before one. I'm doing the fat end of 1500 miles a month and no sign of that decreasing.

I'm forever looking at the Charade for the same reason.

Around 2k would land a pretty much mint low mileage example with aircon.

Not exactly bangernomics at heart but the potential longevity of such a motor is tempting me.
