Default Boxster S

I parked-up my prejudice and tried a 295 BHP Boxster S recently.

It was brilliant.

Not as charismatic as the S and somewhat unexciting to look at but what a driver's car. I gave it some on a known route which would have had my sphincter twitching like a rabbit's nose in an S; the Boxster was in a completely different league.

I've been missing-out big-time.

I'm sure it is a great handling car but I suspect that's not why the majority of owners buy one. All cars confer something on to their drivers and I just couldn't put up with being classed as a Boxsterer ...

Or the eternal pondering of which way you're meant to drive it - forwards ..... or backwards!

I think they're amazing cars, especially the S and the 987/981 variations.

I don't get all of this "you only buy a Boxster if you can't afford a 911". It just doesn't make any sense to me.

Decent second hand, low mileage versions of the 987 can be had for £15,000 to £20,000 and for that money, they're well worth considering I think.

The '09 3.4 S I drove had the original invoice for £47K. It now has just over 30K miles on it, two owners and FPSH for £18K.

There are lots of good ones around for relatively little money and are probably a very 'sensible' buy. But I don't think I will have one. For all the great handling and grunt I thought it a bit 'uninteresting'. The drive reinforced that I am V8 person at heart and my thoughts always go to a C6 Corvette...

... but I'm not prepared to take a bath on a C6 as I suspect there's a big crash to come in C6 values soon. Hopefully.

It's all about the noise like this from 1 m. 44 s...

It's precisely why the world unfairly judges all Porsche owners as twats.

The 911 is in effect a boxster expensively ruined for the sake of a pair of unuseable seats.

The baubliness of some and the stupid options irritate the hell out of me, but it's basically a superb car. I suppose I ought to try the new one although the NSX does the job for me, leaving the S2000 for hooigan-ness. I suppose it's now effectively a Caterham 7 in the over-refined modern automotive world...

I beg to differ. Few years ago we stumbled upon a rather interesting wine cellar in France... and then we were happy we had those 'useless' seats..

Well, you get two boots and an under-roof stowage rack in a Boxster, so you're really no worse off. Even if it looks slammed.

Mind you, they are all probably a bit hot to transport good wine.

I've had tertiary fermentations going on in X-1/9s and NSXs.

And the guy who says that only drives a Vauxhall Insignia because he isn't successful enough at work to get the Audi A4 diesel he dreams of as a company car.

I'm guessing you're an Audi driver?
