Default Buying a car helmet

I have a big head, it's really very big - not japanese pre-teen cartoon big but larger than most helmets fit the L and XL helmets I've tried on haven't fit well, in fact that L helmets don't fit my head at all and the XL ones get on but sit quite high, I've tried on a Shoei one that was large and fit comfortably but it belonged to someone and it also smelled quite funky.

How and where do I buy a decent car helmet for someone with a larger than average bonce?

Is there some way -I can't believe I am asking this here - of measuring my noggen such that if I buy a helmet online, I know it will fit?

Is a bike helmet sufficient as I know that car ones are of a higher spec?

I really don't like sharing crash helmets, it's quite disgusting and fairly sticky and I would like to have one of my own.

Go to a bike shop .. and ask.
They'll explain all, and let you "test" them.

Then go online and you'll know the brand/size that'll fit.

Bike helmets are designed for a bang, and lots of sliding. Car helmets are designed for lots of bangs. I use a bike helmet, as it's good enough for what I do (occasional track, no open topped single seater stuff).

There was a thread about this before and some people suggested open face rally type helmets. Might it be easier to find a decent fit in those? There must be some rallysport suppliers in your neck of the woods, I would have thought.

PS. I've met Danny and his head really is mahoosive ...

Call Grand Prix Racewear on 0844 880 1701, they'll tell you how to measure your head and then if they have any helmets that fit.

Website here, so you can search for any styles they suggest they have.

Despite not being the cheapest, they have always been very helpful over the phone.

Go to Demon Tweeks' website - they have hundreds of helmets and a measuring guide.

Some tracks (Oulton springs to mind) don't allow open faced helmets.

I managed to find a XXL open face to fit me in a local bike shop, cost me

I would bnever buy a helmet without wearing it...

It's not just the size of your head but also the shape...

When I bought my full face helmet I wanted Shark but I couldn't find one to fit and ended up with a Shoei - it has been great...

My open faced helmet is a Peltor (i navigate in a rally car) with built in intercom gear... again a pefect fit which I bought from Demon Tweaks...

My advice, go to a bike shop or motorsport shop try on as many as you can buy the one that fits best...

It makes a world of difference in a number of 24 hours kart races and rallies...

Cheers,

Corgi.

A helmet for your car! now that's novel, you'd be better of with a crash helmet.
Try a couple of bike shops and different makes, not all Large are exactly the same size, it's all down to tolerances and the overlap between sizes, there are two bike shops in Dunfermline and at least one in Kirkcaldy Danny.
