true - that's the modus

round here there was a spate of torching cars

they would do about five in a smallish area and that would be that for the next few weeks

must check and see whether they were ever caught

things like that stir up my vigilante instincts

it's obvious the police can only react

I'd find it good sport

Dirty Pete

Isn't it a common male fantasy though?

Thing is, you don't have to do soemthing silly like getting your hands on them

Photograph them, id them, find where they live

Exact retribution in a way and at a time of your choosing

Always been my way

Full frontal assaults are for headbangers

Back to my thread - we haven't mentioned immigration yet

I bet there'll be some foreigners selling M5s

Still, they like to barter, don't they?

Yes Rich, it's perception and experience.

Thanks for the Autoprotect tip. I assume you've claimed from them? If so, what was the experience like?

Autoprotect have been excellent. No quibbles, just paid the monies straight into the dealer where the work was carried out. I think my 2005 total claims value was in excess of

the M car warranty issue is really getting people worked

not least when comparing to the Porsche and Audi jobbies

leaving cost aside for one minute, you cannot get a BMW warranty on any of their M cars with over 100K on the clock

with Audi, mileage isn't restricted

so the good news is that this WILL depress the values of M cars

and the bad news is that owners will have to stump up big money for a BMW warranty, take their chances with a 3rd party job, or fork out of their own pockets

to give you an idea, the BMW warranty on an M5 with mileage between 60,000 and 100,000 will be over

Jeez - that makes no sense

Can you get an aftermarket one and still get it serviced at the main dealer?

Thats what I've been doing for the last 12months
interesting that people are talking about 'saving up' three claims to minimise excess charges

but then the idea that three warranty claims in a year is acceptable, is rather off-putting with regard to ownership prospects

of course, there are people who will claim for ANYTHING whereas there also those (like me) who are happy to do some invesitigative work and minor things themselves (led changes for example)

the former group may not have helped everone else......

no, you can't combine aftermarket and main dealer servicing

it will come down to a choice as indicated earlier - main dealer and warranty, independent dealer and ditto warranty, either and no warranty but fighting fund (what I was going to do with the Ferrari)

I don't have a particular problem with using independents, it's that I have a particularly good relationship with my local main dealer

it's the warranty cost that's outrageous, and the growing concerns I have over reliability

That may not be the whole story, Pete. From what I've been reading over on bm3w.co.uk, the restriction on servicing to keep the warranty intact is that original BMW parts MUST be used , not that you actually use their dealers.

So, there seems to be a number of people who have used indies for servicing, keeping costs down, but have either procured the relevants parts themselves or have let the indie do it on their behalf.

There is a limit to what the indies can do without the high tech diagnostic stuff that main dealers have access to, so there seems to have been an acceptance that the more complicated servicing and/or problematic diagnosis stuff might need a dealer to sort it.

Either way, I do agree that the revised warranty pricing and excesses are ridiculous and reading about all the potential issues that M3 ownership brings is making me query the wisdom of considering a 3-4 year old one.
