Car Hacking
Reading the Metro today and I note the front page is all about car hacking. Two blokes in the US are suggesting that with the correct computer equipment, they can over-ride the computer in a car and take control of the brakes, steering, accelerator, seatbelts, airbags etc.
This all sounds very worrying to me - especially if such a thing could ever be done remotely (they demonstrated it by connecting their Macbook to the car). I can see the benefit in terms of the police having such power, to bring dangerous drivers to a safe and controlled stop for instance, but this kind of technology could be terrifying if it gets into the wrong hands.
I mean, what would happen if someone hacked into your car and made you listed to Radio 4.

I locked the keys in the boot of the Merc recently.
MB MOBILO came out and it appeared he Blue-toothed into the ECU and next thing the door and bonnet were up and the alarm goes off.
A few seconds later - silence.
Requires a complete reload after (20mins) and seems that its live to MB Germany for security, but nevertheless its clever stuff
Most oem diagnostics can drive all the actuators on the car, I could do everything to the BMW from the laptop, even run the washers.

I remember scare stories about this years ago.

..and for my quite old Mk4 Golf if you have access to the OBD2 port you can do a lot more that read fault codes - pairing a remote keyfob being one of the easier things you can do - cracking the immobiliser chip (getting the PIN code for the clocks where the immobiliser is) can also be done, it's DBW so I suppose it would be possible to change the calibration on the TPS sensor by modifying one of the sensor blocks too - and we are talking about a 12 year old car here so newer ones I'm sure you'll have access to more functionality.
