Default Which cheap diesel

As title really!

The Fiesta 1.4 TDCi does 65mpg mixed where as the Bora/Passats do around 54mpg mixed. In a 10 gallon tank thats about 100 miles which is quite a bit.

One half of me thinks go with the economy while the other half says get something bigger and more comfortable.

Has anybody got any advice?

Anybody owned any of the above?

Anything to look out for on these? I can't help but think that part will be much more expensive for the VWs.

Cheers,

Nick.

Top mounts and clutches on the VW stuff, leaky door seals, knackered VNT turbos, split boost hoses, plastic water pumps falling to bits inside the cooling system etc etc although if they've been serviced properly, a metal bladed pump will have been fitted.

UF, are you saying that there are no similar known faults on the Fiesta?

Boring and Pissrat are old hat and old tech - Fiesta is a bit too new to see those faults, The two i've driven ( Fiestas ) were lovely inside, went well and handled nicely.

Thanks UF.

I know the Fiesta has a problem with injector seals. There will no doubt be other problems but I can't help thinking that fixing problems with the Fiesta will be way cheaper!

UF, was it the 1.4 TDCi you drove?

Yep - not the fastest thing in the world but quick enough to keep pace on motorways as long as you weren't in a hurry , the other one i drove was a 1.6 petrol which was noticeably quicker

Cheers UF.

I'm not too bothered about it being fast. I think if I bought a 1.2 or 1.4 16v fiesta then I'd wring it's neck from time to time to get it to move. with a small diesel I don't think I'd bother as I'd know it wouldn't go anywhere if I did. I think I'll reside myself to the MPG game! Boring but if it means moving house then I'd do it!

Consider residuals too Nick.

VW's hold their money better than fords, there's a good reason for that too.

VW's are much better built, and nicer to drive by a long way.

That's said I've not driven one of the new Fiestas, but I can't imagine they've made any great leaps recently.

Very true Dan.

I must admit that it's the 65mpg combined that's interesting me! About 100 miles per tank is a hefty difference.

I'm only spending £2k max so I wouldn't have thought I'd lose too much oneither really.

Thanks for the input.

On the other hand I'd love a comfortable cruiser like a Passat or Bora. Ahhh! Decisions!
