The F1 thing reminds me Tom Walkinshaw/TWR/Arrows. Lets hope David Richards is more succesful.

This rumour has been going round for a couple of weeks now. Last I heard was that he was struggling to raise the necessary cash to do the deal.

An AML F1 team would be sweet!

It would really bring the sort of prestige to the brand that Ferrari have enjoyed, given their already fairly comprehensive sporting heritage.

Unless DR is able to find a substantial backer, I can't see AM having the wherewithal to finance an F1 team. They're back to being profitable but still don't have that kind of spare cash floating around.

As Eddie Jordan once said, the only way anyone will ever make a small fortune by going racing is if they start out with a large one.....

But I agree it would be good to see AMs competing more widely in motorsport than they do at present, even if F1 is a bit of a stretch.

The Aston Martin works GT1 racing team is only racing at Le Mans this year rather than a full AMLS series too. If they don't have the cash to enter a 12 race series then they won't be entering F1 under the Aston Martin banner in 2008.

AM (albeit in the hands of privateer teams) compete in a lot of motorsport, there are lots of DBR9's, DBRS9's and AMV8's being raced in various GT series.

We dont want a repeat of MG when they used money which they didnt have on racing cars, flashy expos and models etc, rather than putting this into car models etc.

IIRC David Richards is one of the teams that has already been approved to run an F1 team in 2008 (or was it 2009) so he's obviously already got the company structure geared up for this anyway.

Aston would just be a (nice) name to put on the cars. The Aston brand may well attract a huge amount of sponsorship too.
