I have got myself into a car pickle

I have a daily beater that's as nice as beaters get, pretty much depreciation proof too

As with most tasty beaters the cost of parts prohibits repairs using new bits so I have been waiting for a parts car

I've now got a parts car but it's really too good to break up so I'm thinking of keeping it and selling the beater as is

I wish cars made life simpler not more complicated

Now I have two cars, only want one, at just the wrong time of year to break one or sell the other

Stick it on ebay. 99p no reserve auction to end on Sunday evening about 8.00pm, or wait until the New Year.

I would normally advise such a tactic but Christmas is a special time and you really could get peanuts for the car if you were unlucky

If it was a £500 snotter then I'd risk it but given that I want £3K for it, there's too much of a risk

I think I'll just have to advertise in the usual places (aside from ebay) but expect to be stuffed until mid January at the earliest

Really it's quite ridiculous. My plan was perfect. Parts cars are supposed to be just that.

I may go outside and hover around the parts car with a mallet. If I can bring myself to wreck a screen and a couple of panels the decision to break will be easier.

Goes against the grain to damage something sound though. I've never done that before.

Sold a car yesterday on Ebay to a guy in the trade. I imagine a big chunk of Ebay buyers are in the trade so time of year may not be so important.

Put the reserve up to near £3k. Think it costs an extra £10 to do that on Ebay.

i agree, this time of year people are skint or sick of spending, but that could carry through well into the new year

what is it?

Are you sure it's really better than your beater, or does it just appear so? New car syndrome, if you will.

Maybe you should hang on to both for a while & see which one works out/you like best - space and insurance hassles permitting.

It's probably a CWOT advertising for the next fortnight/month anyway.

You will look like you're having a Basil Fawlty moment if you use that mallet!

not better per se, just a better overall solution

car one needed THE part plus there's always a few bits you can use

car two had THE part plus odd bits and what was left would break very well

BUT car two, despite a couple of niggles, which I think I can fix, has 20K fewer miles on it

If I kept car 2 and sold car one, I would end up with not such a nice version of the same car but quids equal and none of the hassle of breaking or the hassle and cost of swapping THE part between cars

I think.

Yours

Bssil

ps this is the reality of running old, (once) expensive cars

mostly great fun, occasionally a bit mind-bending

Can you swap any buts you like from beater to spares car?

A Passat? I've always thought a Phaeton would bevan amusing buy in a couple of years.
