Default Diesel tuning

Hi knowledgable ones.......

I've just ordered a Seat Ibiza FR 1.6tdi as my work-a-day commuter, but ideally, I'd like a few extra ponies; anyone know much about chip/re-map/tuning box options?

Ideally I'd like something invisible to the dealer when it goes in for services, so plug and play tuning boxes caught my eye, but I've read mixed reports - some people rave about them, but some mechanics are critical; anyone have any experience with them, good or bad?

As ever, any comments and advice gratefully accepted.

Cheers,

One apon a time I had a 306 hdi, I fitted a turbo back exhaust system and a tuning box and the car was completely transformed and gave a few much more expensive petrol machines a run for there money. Only down side was even more of the black smoke.

I've had my first foray into diesel tuning, since buying my fabia vrs 1.9tdi.

These tuning boxes companies well they will tell you any crap but basically all they do is over fuel over the entire rev range since they plug into the fuel rail , since the more fuel you inject the more power on diesels to an extent the problem is that's half the story, raised egts/cylinder temps and black smoke, they typically have a horrible torque spike unless they somehow can read other ecu parameters. You have a whole load of other parameters to adjust like boost, timing (though timing usually never does a great deal).

If you want a box then a processor based one is a must, i have one on my gf's that was around 110 off eBay and i opened it up and it's good a lot of dodgy boxes out there though faking processor internals.

£80

Cheaper than i thought, he seems to have a top seller rating now. I've a box by the same company on my GF's car for around 18 month now with no problems at all, you can also ring the chap up.

You'll see they are not over inflated figures and are realistic too, its a processing type and had dip switches to up the power level.

I've tested it on a dyno, my GF's yaris 1.4 diesel was 98BHP to begin with (8 BHP over book figures :s ) and ended up at 118BHP with around 28 lb ft more toeque. We did have a remap but she wanted the ease of removal, this was on the highest power setting but i knocked it down to 5 out of 6. The remap of course made more power than the box but not a substantial amount more but it was smoother and i preferred it.

Your MPG readout may go up but i wouldn't trust it.
