E39 M5
So i'm on my way into work and pull up to an M5 waiting at the lights.
I knew it was an M5 because it was lowered and had about 50 M5/M badges on it and 4 exhausts.
Imagine then my suprise when he gunned his SIX Cylinder and I just walzed off into the distance.
I'm sure he had a gawp at the 'Type-R' badge on my boot
You do have to wonder why they do it....

the E39 M5 is stealthy
you need to look for oval wing mirrors - possible to replace on a cooking version, but expensive - around £1000 a pair, even a single glass is £250
or the oval rear view mirror - v v difficult to replace and megabucks
'angel eye' headlights is a cheap mod and wasn't on pre-2001 facelift cars anyway
I suspect owners see it as modding, the same way some S2000 owners see a single exhaust as modding
unforunately, few people seem to truly customise anything any more
it's all stick on/screw on/bolt on stuff

There are a couple of E60 M5 lookalikies knocking around Sheffield that i've seen. I actually pulled up next to one with a couple of asians in a few months ago and put the window and asked if it was an M5 as there was a lot of black smoke comin out the back and he might want to get it checked out.. He said it was and I drove off laughin...

Why do people want to make their car a sheep in wolf's clothing?
It just shouts "I'm poor - I can't afford it and it's chipping away at me."

It's a warning device, to let you know the type!
It lets you know they've been fully suckered by the aspirational thing and that thet'll never be satisfied and never be able to work out why they're not.
