F1 in HD
Geek moment:
The last few races weren't in HD.
They were SD feeds broadcast on the BBC HD channel, so were upscaled SD - something which your HD TV has to do anyway.
BBC HD is HD at either 720p or 1080i. Admittedly not the 1080p or 1080p-24 of a blu-ray, but HD nevertheless.

Oh, fair enough, hopefully they will broadcast in Dolby Digital as well then, hear the cars coming from everywhere!
I swear I read something somewhere that said it wasn't, ah well.

The sound feed has been encoded with Pro-Logic surround of some sort for many years now, and on BBC HD last year was DD2 for certain, and possibly DD5.1 (can't remember).
If it's DD2, it'll have the PLII/PLIIx encoding included so a surround sound amplifier/processor will decode it into a surround sound signal.
Trouble is, the sound effects get messed up because you hear both the atmosphere mics based on what's on screen, but that gets mixed up with the commentators' mics picking up the background noise.
The season review DVDs/Blu-Rays are a good watch if you want really good sound effects (and HD if in Blu-Ray).
