Just like the 116/MINI; it appears they couldn't machine a knife to cut themselves with.

With all the DPF regen etc issues, you've gotta be nuts to buy a cancer engine these days.

It's only a tiny bit different to the previous 2.0d engines with their butterfly valve failures. Wat is it with bm and their Diesel engines? They make the best in the world...but seem to be incapable of doing so without some critical production flaw?

Having said that, the 35's seem trouble free.

My boss has just got shot of his 520d,the turbo packed in which was just over a grand, and they also said the cam chain could do with replacing, which is an engine out job apparently.im sure there was a few more issues with the car aswell:-(he bought it new and it was only a year out of warranty
He now drives an Audi a4 which is a much better car he reckons

Having been amongst quite a few high miler company car owners for quite a while, he might be in for some surprises with the Vaggie too!
The fuel consmption quotes are interesting to the point of being fraudulent.

There are several BMWs in our pool, most due for change soon, so about 80-100k on them.
Nobody in the group has had any problems at all.
My little 318d is off in June at 80k or so, never had a single thing fail.
The Audi A4s collegues have had have seen some electronic gremlins, and my boss's Evoque is already giving trouble with electronics.

Scores of owners with pre March 2011 cars to be precise.
Its not exactly new news then is it?

It's not a good decade for BMW is it?
With all the thefts by key coding which is so easy,
The cracking alloy wheels which was and is a major issue,
The N54 HPO Fuel pump failures,
Engine that ingest thier swirl flaps,
320i sport motors going pop all over the place
The cams and cranks on the facelift einser....

Oh well, time for another brand.
I see Renualt are pretty good ....do you see anyhting like this on a Megane?

there's even a wiki link on the engine where it describes it as "being prone to excessive timing chain wear and premature failure":

Funniest part was needing to swap out the crank, because the timing gear isn't separately replaceable.

They can be very stupid at times, these engineers.
