They smell an opportunity for the WCC next year I suspect. Their thinking is probably even if Red Bull, Merc, Lotus and McLaren manage to build an overall faster car and they still have no hope of the drivers championship, as long as they are there or there abouts two of the best drivers will bring home a healthy haul of points every race. Mercs line up is the only one that comes close.

I wonder how Alonso will feel if it becomes clear the glory of the drivers championship isn't a priority for the team. I reckon if they don't give him a winning car next year he won't stick with them.

It's a good point. Massa's biggest weakness is Raikonnen's biggest strength: consistency.

Ferrari didn't ditch Raikonnen the first time to bring in Alonso, as keeps being reported. They ditched him because he'd obviously lost motivation, was beaten by Massa in both 2008 and 2009, and that at a time he was the highest paid driver in the sport. He has been very impressive on his return, but I'm amazed Ferrari seem to have forgotten all that.

Exactly, Massa was quicker than Kimi, and Alonso will be quicker than Kimi, so perhaps Ferrari know more than me afterall, and realising that Kimi will be no match for Alonso that will keep Alonso happy, and as you and PhilpGB rightly point out kimi is very consistent, therefore increasing the teams points.

However, things will take a turn for the worst if Kimi drives faster than Alonso (as Hamilton did at Mclaren) ... I don't think that is likely ... and obviously Ferrari don't either ... will be great TV if it turns out that Kimi is quicker though!

Monaco is one of, if not the slowest circuit in the F1 calendar.

The more I think about this the more I think this is a master stroke from Ferrari.

Prost and Senna anyone? ... I am not stating that these two are in the same league as Prost and Senna, just that they are as unlikely a pair of team mates .. but Mclaren dominated for two years with Prost and Senna vying for the drivers championship ... and all Ferrari care about is the constructors championship anyhow ... makes perfect sense for them to have to two world champion drivers clutching all the points throughout the year making the constructors championship Ferrari's once again.

Alonso to McLaren for 2014?

http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/formula-one/24171278

Wonder whether it would be Jensen or Perez to make way?

Never going to happen.

Asked if he wanted the double world champion, McLaren team principal Martin Whitmarsh said: "Yes - any team would. He's the best driver."
So a team principle of one of two teams that are realistically an option for a top flight driver asked in passing if he would hypothetically want him does, and also takes the opportunity to make a backhanded slight against Hamilton then the BBC attempts to turn it into a legitimate story.

Doesn't sound very likely. Alonso's already said he plans to end his career with Ferrari. It's just Martin Whitmarsh being honest as usual. I'm sure if you asked John Booth of Marussia if he'd like Alonso in the car next year, he'd give the same answer.

There's something weird going on at McLaren. When Hamilton announced he was leaving, they made a big deal about announcing Perez in a 3 year deal, yet a year later they won't confirm he'll be in the car for 2014. Maybe they're now getting pressure from Honda.

I appreciate that this years McLaren is a poor car, but eve taking this into account, t I think Perez has had a very lack-lustre season.
